The canopy fabric is made of a lightweight denier polyester, offering water resistant features and 50+ UPF, which we love. Being protected from the suns harmful UVB rays is probably why you wanted a canopy tent in the first place, and this Ozark Trail tent meets all criteria in this department. The one complaint we have is that there is no vents in the fabric at the peak to release the build up of hot air under the canopy. Most new tents incorporate this ventilated canopy design to increase airflow and reduce the trapping of hot air, helping to keep those in the shade cooler and more comfortable. It’s worth highlighting that despite the advertised dimensions of the 10×10 Ozark Trail, because this is a slant leg shelter the top only measures 8×8.
Pick up and drop off days weren’t charged as part of the rental period which was awesome. They had exactly what we needed for our 7-day canoe trip and worked with us to find the solution that best fit our needs. They were very flexible with us when our plans changed due to a storm and we had to keep some ozark trail screen house of the gear a bit longer than expected. I highly recommend renting your gear from them. I ordered a good amount of things from their used section and all of it was in great shape. One thing I ordered had a patch on it so they sent me a photo of it before shipping to make sure I was still okay with it.
The one on the Academy is a big button that’s easier to press instead of the little pill shaped button on the Ozark that can pinch fingers. Everything else is pretty much the same including the vent at the top that seems to help in the heat. The mechanism in the center of the canopy to raise and lower it may be a little better on the academy too. You can see it in one of the Ozark trail pictures. Many campground picnic tables are either six feet or eight feet long.
All the gear was shipped on time and was in excellent condition. I had a great experience renting gear from outdoors geek. Super easy process, great gear that allowed me to check out a national park without having to buy a bunch of gear I won’t use. I picked this up on the last deal when it was only the white available. If not secured, all it takes is one good wind to take it for a spin down the beach or accross the campground resulting in a pile of tiwsted wreckage.
Rented the Winter Backpacking package with my girlfriend the other weekend for doing some backcountry camping at Rocky Mountain National Park. It seems there are more accessories available for straight leg canopies, but can’t swear to it. I was able to set up the 10×10 by myself on our patio at home, but that was flat concrete, which made it easier. I think on a gravel pad or dirt I could have done it, it just would have taken longer. It’s like @dbhost said, work your way around it, a little at a time. Honestly, the hardest part was folding up the canopy fabric after taking it off. 12×12 would give enough clearance to be able to walk all the way around an 8′ table while staying under the canopy.
