It’s ideal for cooking large, one-pan meals for big groups of campers. If you love to create kitchen-quality or “gourmet” food from scratch in rustic conditions, this is the stove for you. The Mountaineer is larger (at 25¼ by 13¾ by 5¼ inches, it dwarfs our top pick). It’s heavier (17 pounds, versus the Coleman Classic’s 11 pounds). And it offers way more heat output (40,000 Btu, versus the Coleman Classic’s 20,000 Btu).

Coleman made the Model 2F stove, here in John Stendahl’s collection, in 1934. Model 454 is an instant lighting Utility Burner that is similar to the 456 Soldering Furnace, and dates to the late 1920’s coleman camp stove – early 1930’s. The utility burner is finished in brown Colac paint; the collar has the original brown paint. The upper parts of the utility burner were painted with high temperature black paint.

If you aren’t convinced that you need to splurge, we recommend checking out the Gas One GS-3000. It ranks lower in terms of boil time and fuel efficiency, but this single-burner butane stove gets it done for a fraction of the price. Where the Cascade shines is in the finer control it allows throughout the range of temperatures. Most camping stoves, including our top pick, have a tendency to jump temperatures, from very low to very high, with barely a touch of the hand. Coleman in Wichita made the popular 425 series beginning in 1948. These Model 425 stoves, in John Stendahl’s collection, are undated. Coleman used the parallelogram decals inside the top lids on their stove models beginning with the 425 Model above .

But if all you need is a simple, compact, and inexpensive single burner for heating water and basic meals, the Gas One is a solid choice and an excellent value. The Coleman Classic finished toward the bottom in our tests, though. The two coleman stove 10,000 BTU burners boiled water in 5 and a half minutes — nearly the slowest of the seven stoves we tested. First, the plastic latches seem flimsy and didn’t always feel like they were holding the stove shut as securely as other latches.
