Schwinn Ider Dual Suspension Mountain Bike, 21-speeds

The bike weighs a hair over 36 pounds which is on the heavy side, but I found it doesn’t suffer for climbing, and getting it in the air doesn’t take too much effort either. In fact, despite the short knobs on the tires and limited gearing, the Axum climbs steep, technical trails well. The 67.8° head angle is reasonable for a hardtail and the seat tube angle keeps the front end planted, while the rigid, schwinn electric bike aluminum rear end transfers pedal power efficiently. In terms of climbing traction, I think the weight of the bike is actually a plus, as are the 2.6-inch-wide tires. Twenty-niner wheels, one-by drivetrains, and dropper posts were once just for in-the-know riders. Now, the entry-level and budget-friendly Schwinn Axum delivers all of this, plus a surprise or two beyond the official spec sheet.

“Schwinn” is printed in green and yellow on the downtube of the bicycle and “Abbott” is printed in blue on the top tube of the bicycle near the bicycle stem and handlebars. That feels significantly better to me, and it’s worth the price. Even the first tubeless models felt better in terms of grip and suppleness, and those took a frustrating amount of work to set up.

One thing Schwinn does excellently is they offer entry-level bikes to suit everyone. W. Schwinn, grandson Frank Valentine Schwinn took over management of the company. By 1950, Schwinn had decided the time was right to grow the brand. At the time, most bicycle manufacturers in the United States sold in bulk to department stores, which in turn sold them as store brand models. F. Goodrich bicycles, sold in tire stores, Schwinn eliminated the practice of producing private label bicycles in 1950, insisting that the Schwinn brand and guarantee appear on all products. In exchange for ensuring the presence of the Schwinn name, distributors retained the right to distribute Schwinn bikes to any hardware store, toy store, or bicycle shop that ordered them. W. Schwinn tasked a new team to plan future business strategy, consisting of marketing supervisor Ray Burch, general manager Bill Stoeffhaas, and design supervisor Al Fritz.

It’s not rare to see a Schwinn mountain bike at a bike park ripping down a trail. When it comes to cycling, Schwinn is an entry-level brand you will hear a lot about, and they have an incredible heritage when it comes to bikes, especially mountain bikes. A main tube should never fail since all falls, whether uphill or down, are serious even with helmets and gloves. These bicycles were targeted for the low end of the market with a ridiculously low price and still turning a profit for Schwinn, no doubt accomplished by poor materials and/or insufficient testing.
