Serial 1 SWITCH MTN unveiled as Harley’s new electric mountain bike

The most obvious pro is the price, this bike is very cheap and affordable for what you get in the box and for most purposes of daily commutes to the store or to work, it will do perfectly. So far I have owned this bike for close to a month, so I will tell my thoughts about all the pros and cons I have found. The bike is easy to ride as long as you adjust the seat, oil the chain, and keep the bike maintained, you shouldn’t have too many problems with it straight out the box. It is well assembled (for the most part) and I don’t think the bike will break or disassemble on me while I ride it. It is an aluminum frame and the tag that was attached to the bike says that it can hold about 275 lbs or so.

The BASH/MTN used a similar-looking frame design to the rest of Serial 1’s e-bikes. These electric-assisted bicycles provide a versatile and accessible means of engaging in physical activity, catering to individuals of varying fitness levels. Riding an eBike encourages cardiovascular exercise, leg muscle engagement, and overall mobility. I’m looking for a cheap (i.e. about this price) ebike hyper bike for food deliveries as I’m tired of pedaling up and down hills all day long. Of course, it’s the climbs most people care about, but even then, shaving a few hundred grams off a bike won’t transform anyone from a rouleur to a grimpeur. Giant also developed a new ‘ThinLine’ lightweight paint, bringing the total weight savings to 140g versus the already very light 2020 TCR Advanced SL Disc.

Canyon’s 2019 Ultimate CF EVO Disc 10.0 LTD, for example, weighed just 6.04kg in a size medium, while its 5.1kg Ultimate CF Evo 10.0 SL showed what was possible in the rim-brake era. In 2022, the opening stages around Copenhagen were pan-flat, meaning weight wasn’t a concern and riders went all-in on aero. On top of this, the lightest bike we saw – Simon Clarke’s Factor 02 VAM – weighed just 6.925kg ready to race. As a result, bikes such as the classically styled Cannondale SuperSix Evo of yesteryear are a rare sight nowadays; as are skinny tubular tyres and rims. Round tubes are typically more structurally efficient than aerofoil-shaped tubes, and can therefore be made lighter.

The hubs, in turn, have been designed specifically for this bicycle and produced from high-strength aerospace aluminum. That innovative approach takes inspiration from beyond the realm of conventional two-wheelers, drawing from the designs of high-performance cars. It doesn’t just adopt design principles known in the bicycle industry but also benefits from Aston Martin’s know-how in the supercar and hypercar programs. This can be seen, for example, in the pierced stem, which mirrors the side strake of the Aston Martin DB12. Customers will have a choice between 12-speed groupsets from companies like Shimano, Campagnolo, and Sram Red. The mountain bike drivetrain includes components from SRAM’s SX Eagle lineup, such as a 1×12 gear setup combined with an electric bike-specific single-click trigger shifter.

In 2010, Jean Wauthier, a UCI technical advisor, told BikeRadar the limit was set taking into account “sensory-motor coordination, stability, balance, manoeuvrability, adherence, postural comfort, a vision-posture system and safety”. Removable accessories, such as bike computers or water bottles, are not included in this, but fixed accessories (ones that can’t be removed during competition) such as pedals, bottle cages and bike computer mounts are. As the sport’s global governing body, the Union Cycliste International (or UCI for short) defines the technical regulations for bicycles and equipment used in its sanctioned races and events.

The .1R combines the best of the worlds of automotive engineering and design and road bicycles, relying on modern production technologies, high-strength materials, and attention to the smallest details. Small but pointed details are present throughout, like the use of the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s ultra-thin titanium badge, and a miniature replica of the hypercar’s wheel design on the titanium piston caps of the bike brakes. ‘Working in collaboration with Aston Martin we have not only taken our titanium bicycles to new heights but have also unlocked true innovation within the cycling industry,’ says Oliver Laverack.

‘We have created a bicycle with unparalleled levels of craftsmanship and performance engineering.’ As a result, everything is seamless, concealed and smooth, with no exposed cables or hoses. This meticulously finished machine is the result of a collaboration between Aston Martin and titanium bicycle specialist J.Laverack. The J.Laverack Aston Martin .1R is a handcrafted road bicycle that is tailored to each owner like a bespoke suit. Aston Martin will be offering up their online configurator for customers to explore all the available options on a bicycle that blends high-tech materials with handcrafts. If many of the parts look familiar next to Serial 1’s other urban e-bikes, that’s because they share the same DNA. The SWITCH/MTN is built on a similar foundation, including the same 90 Nm mid-drive Brose S Mag motor and proprietary in-frame 529 Wh removable battery developed in part by Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire motorcycle engineers.

Bikes such as the Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8, the latest Factor O2 VAM, Orbea Orca OMX, Canyon Ultimate CFR and the Giant TCR Advanced SL can all be built down to weights that tickle or even break the limit. They bite down on large 203 mm rotors that are a full 2.3 mm thick, all but eliminating the chances of brake fade when bombing long downhill segments. No surprises, just great bikes that you can pay off with as low as 0% APR financing from Affirm on select bikes.

I tried to unscrew it and snap it in place, but the machine that put the nuts on really did a job and got that thing on really tight, so I decided to leave it alone. The last and probably the biggest problem was that there was no quick release hyper bike for the bike seat, it was missing from the set. Even when we tried contacting both the seller and manufacturer they didn’t want to just ship a part out, they instead wanted us to ship the entire thing back and gives us a whole new bike set.
