The wires are all the more noticeable thanks to the Microplus thin fabric. That said, it does offer a nice preheat feature with a separate button on its well-designed controllers. Don’t fold, bunch up, or pinch your heated bedding while you’re using it. That could cause excessive heat to build up, damaging the wires or sunbeam electric blanket even causing a fire if other safety mechanisms fail. The combination of electricity and bedding naturally makes some people nervous. But engineering and fire-safety experts told us that today’s heated bedding is very safe when certified by an independent testing lab , kept in good working condition, and used correctly.
The blankets with the widest temperature range and the most even heating are the Bedsure and Woomer Electric Heated Throw. The Bedsure has a temperature range of 73˚, 85˚, and 90˚, along with a standard deviation of 2.2˚. The Woomer Electric Heated Throw did well with a temperature range of 74.5˚, 84˚, and 90˚, along with a standard deviation of 2.2˚. The Degrees of Comfort blanket had the lowest standard deviation at 1.7˚ but lacked maximum temperature, capping at around 85˚.
We also ensured that the tester’s body temperature had a chance to drop back down between each test. The Sunbeam Quilted Fleece Heated Blanket was the least welcoming of the bunch. It’s made from polyester like many others, but it’s neither soft nor cozy, and I didn’t want it against my bare skin. Additionally, the wires inside this blanket were very stiff—you can feel them immediately when you lie under it, and they made the blanket difficult to fold.
