At first, I found it a bit challenging to get used to, but with a little practice, I managed to get the hang of it. The price is also quite reasonable, considering the functionality, durability, and the range of features it provides. A perk of hiking lesser-traveled trails are fewer (or non-existent) permits and parking fees.
I also don’t really prefer single compartment stuff bags, but, this works for what I need. Be aware, this is a daypack, intended for lighter loads and shorter distances. It isn’t built to be on your back 8 hours a day, and it won’t support 25 pounds. Used for its intended purpose, this is one of the best hiking/backpacking deals I’ve ever come across. For more thorough cleaning, you can remove any removable parts such as shoulder straps, hip belts, and other accessories and wash them separately in cold water.
I think you could strap things to the outside, as it has a daisy chain and two loops at the bottom. I agree with the other reviewer though, I would not go over about pounds with this pack. My shoulders did not chafe nor rub or irritate while walking and ozark trail chair I did not get any bruising on my hips. I only walked about a mile away on a dirt trail to the showers but it was not a flat surface and the equiptment on my back was stable. Fast and easy to adjust and all buckles and webbing are in good quality.
Be prepared to face changing weather conditions out in the wilderness. A backpacking stove is a convenient way to boil water for dehydrated meals and instant coffee without adding a lot of weight to your pack. Despite the minor drawback with the zipper, overall, it’s been a reliable and trustworthy companion on my travels and adventures. This is a personal choice because I’d rather have some wetness on my lower body and not be sweating and cold all over. I sweat under the best of rain shells when hiking hard in moderately cold temps. The umbrella gives me a little roof to walk under, but it’s not for everybody.
If you’re looking for a daypack, or a carry-on that fits everywhere, this is the deal. I am a 6-foot tall male, weighing 185 lbs and it fits just as well as other day packs I’ve tried. I bought this pack recently on a whim while shopping Walmart. I needed a day pack and didn’t really have lots of time to search at REI for the various styles provided having only gone to one store.
