In our most epic adventure to date, Sophie and Jérémy set off for a two-and-a-half-year journey from Alaska to Patagonia – the length of the Americas! On board a pair of Longitudes, they aim to finish in December 2019.Back at home, Alex Staniforth covers the UK’s 100 highest points on bike, foot and – if needed – kayak! Our Vapour genesis bike gets the carbon treatment, the Zero goes disc, while Connor Swift races a prototype Zero SL to victory at its first outing. There’s also a posh Croix de Fer in 931 guise, the Equilibrium and Day One get disc brakes and the prototype Fugio 853 makes it into production – just in time for Vin Cox to thrash it across the TransIowa.
The groupset is Shimano Tiagra with a 2×10 drivetrain while the maximum tyre size is 25c. For those interested in dipping their toes into racing, or just want a sportier feeling bike, the Zeal range is Genesis’ entry level carbon option. The geometry is more aggressive than the endurance-oriented Equilibrium, but not quite as ‘head-down bum-up’ as the dedicated racers that are the Zeros. A solid steel range and a smattering of aluminium and carbon models brings the brand bang up to date. 500 watt direct drive motor is quiet and capable but offers less torque and weighs more, no regen modes. Simple to operate with LED console and twist throttle only, no pedal assist or LCD……
If you’re trying to save money, check out the other affordable electric bikes I’ve reviewed. High speed, off-road only electric bike that’s not legal to ride in most states without modification and insurance. Quality SRAM, Truvativ and ZOOM components, hand assembled in the USA, solid two year warranty… Genesis bikes offer something for everyone, from off-road adventurers to city slickers.
Part of this is down to the different frame material, but cheaper components are also a factor. A rim brake version is available in addition to the disc option and both come with Shimano Ultegra 2×11 groupsets. The maximum tyre size on bike is 28c, typical for rim brake set ups but relatively narrow for a bike with discs. But for races that are solely on roads, this should be more than adequate. Yeah… I think future ProdecoTech bikes will be better but this one (and the other rear-mount designs) just aren’t that balanced and the features are very basic.
