Some of the bikes sold at these stores aren’t suitable for upgrade. There are bikes I didn’t like, but I haven’t seen any that couldn’t be salvaged if given enough resources. The Pacific Evolution is a bike that was so far below my limited expectations that I still don’t think it’s worthy of any effort. But on a mountain bike, weight can really drag down the enjoyment. And I’ve come to appreciate the role they play in getting people into cycling.
The wrench built into my multi-tool is made for tires, so it is slightly too large to fit and adjust the handlebars because they used another type of bolt like screw for it. This is a minor problem because I just added a wrench to my backpack repair kit and moved along.
