The lowest gear is a nice big ring in the back for helping on those hills. The Marshall ebike has a throttle and 5 pedal assist levels. The pedal assist level only affects the boost you get when pedalling, not the throttle speed.
Schwinn has been a staple cycling brand for over 125 years. They’ve been key innovators in racing cycles, road bikes, and the subject of today’s list, e-bikes. The 250 watt motor could be bigger for this bike to use the throttle regularly and give a better boost on hills.
There’s not a lot of choice here, you just turn the console on with a 0/1 toggle switch and either begin pedaling or push down on the giant paddle trigger. This makes the bike easy to use for just about anyone and reduces distractions when riding. If you want to know how fast you’re going you will need to add an aftermarket LCD display as seen on the bike in this review and that could cost ~$25.
The battery has to be on before turning the bike on which got me the first time I tried. The battery is a 288 watt-hour battery built with cells which takes about 4 hours to charge. While you can ride in light rain or snow if needed, it is not recommended to expose the e-bike to water, as this may damage the battery and other electric components. You can turn the lights on and off with a button on the handlebar controller. Press and hold the + button for 3 seconds to turn on just the headlight.
Putting the Marshall together takes about 30 minutes and isn’t difficult. It might take you a bit longer if you aren’t familiar with ebikes. The middle power/enter button turns the bike on while holding it.

In terms of pricing, this is not the cheapest e-bike you can buy. But it’s one of the least expensive ones you can buy from a bike company. All it takes is careful consideration of a few questions and then a bit of a deeper dive to explore what options and features you want most on your electric-powered ride. Nothing feels cheap, plastic-y, or vulnerable to quick failure. You also get two different frame sizes to choose from, which is a big upgrade over the single one-size-fits-all frames that many e-bike companies still offer. So to offer a full-size electric bike with otherwise nice commuter features yet with such a small battery is a bit surprising.
E-biking is very powerful and addictive, and it has ruined traditional cycling for me, and I can’t decide if that’s a good thing. So, while my doctor, my therapist, and I all unpack that, this is my full review of the Coston CE e-bike from Schwinn. What makes me excited about the bike is the possibilities that it opens up, but like a lot of aspects of this bike, it’s something of a double-edged sword.
