The Ozark Trail brand offers several backpacks suitable for hiking. One of the most popular options is the Ozark Trail 2-in-1 40L/70L Backpack. This backpack features a 40-liter main compartment and a detachable 30-liter daypack that can be used separately or combined with the main compartment for a larger 70-liter capacity. One downside was that I did experience a manufacturing defect — the sterner strap kept sliding out from the top, which was frustrating to say the least.

Monitoring rain in the area you’re going to hike and contacting locals can help you determine if smaller creeks might act as water sources. Last fall when hiking dry sections of the Ouachita Trail, we planted water caches for insurance, but this involved driving to pick up empty jugs after the trip. With the added height of an inflatable pillow and sleeping pad my head height was indeed close to the curvature of the tent ceiling but there was still enough room. I did have a few inches along the edge for some clothes, a water bottle, and a headlamp, but that could have been made wider with a narrower sleeping pad.

I’ve also used a poncho which kept my upper body dry, but I still get clammy. For me, planning campsites involves guesswork and looking at topographical maps. The Kenda tires would’ve been fun to ride on slightly more consistent and hard-packed gravel roads. However, with nearly 300 pounds of total weight on roads populated by jagged rocks, downhill runs meant bottoming out the tires, which meant pinch flats. It’s also small enough that it wasn’t inconvenient for them to have it with them everyday. Be aware, this is a daypack, intended ozark trail chair for lighter loads and shorter distances. It isn’t built to be on your back 8 hours a day, and it won’t support 25 pounds.

The set-up was understandably a few steps shorter, which is always nice when setting up in the dark. More than once in the dark I’ve attached a rain fly upside down and we had to restart that particular step. This tent was close to foolproof when it came to the rain fly because it was already connected.
