Trail Friendly Business Spotlight: Genesis Bicycles D&L

The service manager, Jimmy Madden, says it has been wonderful to learn about e-bikes since it gets even more family members out on the trail who might otherwise stay home. Genesis also features a wide array of parts, accessories, and apparel. For those interested in dipping their toes into racing, or just want a sportier feeling bike, the Zeal range is Genesis’ entry level carbon option. The geometry is more aggressive than the endurance-oriented Equilibrium, but not quite as ‘head-down bum-up’ as the dedicated racers that are the Zeros.

The aero features of more expensive bikes are present, with cables are routed internally and the leading edges of the frame are smoothly rounded. The groupset is Shimano Tiagra with a 2×10 drivetrain while the maximum tyre size is 25c. That’s not to say that they’ve forgotten the road market. A solid steel range and a smattering of aluminium and carbon models brings the brand bang up to date. About three years ago, they brought in e-bikes, which added a new avenue of bicycle access for someone who might need a pedal assist from an electric motor.

The frame is fully carbon and the cables are integrated into the frame for a cleaner look and better aerodynamics. Versatility still pervades the frame, with downtube bottle bosses and mounts for a rear rack and mudguards. Although this bike can take on the commuting duties or a bit of cycle-touring, it is more suited to lively riding in the woods and on bridleways.

For the entry level, you’ll get a Shimano Claris 2×8 drivetrain, an aluminium frame and carbon fork. Whilst the 30 model gets a Shimano 105 2×11 drivetrain, along with the aluminium frame and carbon fork. Giant is the largest manufacturer of quality bicycles in the world. What they owned in “build quality” they lacked in brand connectivity. Genesis was hired to help create a brand visual language to help tie the products into a cohesive whole in the global marketplace. Finding the center of the brand design was based on our uncovering the “truth in materials” position.

They have a program called BikesGiving where they ask customers to log their miles over the course of a year. When everyone turns in their miles on October 31, Genesis gives a penny per mile to a charity genesis bicycles that’s hyper-local. Last year, the Children’s Home of Easton received a check for $2,460. Just because a bike is designed for one specific purpose doesn’t mean it is limited to that purpose.

Over ten years the range expanded beyond commuter bikes to include road, mountain, cyclo-cross, gravel, kids and fat bikes. Helping aid comfort and all-terrain ability even further are the 37mm-wide tyres, smoothing the ride whatever the surface.

The geometry is a little more upright, making for a more comfortable and less twitchy ride. There are mounts for mudguards and a pannier rack, which expands the range of use from just road riding to commuting and even lightweight cycle touring. The Venerable Croix de Fer frameset has been a mainstay of the Genesis range since 2009. The frameset is incredible versatile and lends itself to a multitude of different builds. You could put 38c tyres on it and go bike-packing on some gravel, or you could put front and rear pannier racks on, throw in some mudguards, and take it on an around the world tour. You could even commute, go on road rides, use it as a utility shopper.

This gives a Genesis bicycle bought in Millet, Alberta, a two-year warranty. With a 2×9 Shimano Sora groupset and mechanical disc brakes, there are notable differences to the higher end Croix de Fer. But these won’t present an impediment to getting out and using the frame for the huge variety of applications it has the capability for. Gravel riding, endurance road riding, cycle-touring, commuting, these are all still possible on this bike – it’s just a more accessible platform to get started with. The angles are steep, the front end is low and there aren’t mudguard or pannier mounts.
