Some hikers may choose to continue on Trace Creek to the Taum Sauk section, but OT thru-hikers should head west onto Middle Fork/John Roth Memorial section to complete the longer route. This hilly 26-mile segment gains over 2,600 feet of elevation over a contoured landscape crossing brooks, streams, and wetlands, as well as small savannahs of oak and hickory hardwoods. For this review, I spent almost a full workday sitting in the chairs I tested, and took note of how comfortable each chair seemed. I then considered the weight of each one and how well they packed or stored for traveling or hiking purposes. The pack size and weight is good for all my day hiking to any shower. I’m not sure if it is durable enough to hold any of my camera equipment.
Last fall when hiking dry sections of the Ouachita Trail, we planted water caches for insurance, but this involved driving to pick up empty jugs after the trip. After all, I was carrying the whole thing and so it might as well be connected. Essentially, the rain fly for the Ozark Trail was integrated into the tent directly. The next section along Trace Creek is an enjoyable, quiet walk in the woods.
Compared to rain jackets, ponchos get a decent amount of airflow through the giant hole at the bottom and can be worn over top of your backpack. This maximizes your protection and potentially saves you the weight of a separate pack cover (or the weight of a rain-sodden pack if you opt for an internal pack liner). Rain pants are deathly uncomfortable and inconvenient to put on / take off. As a result, many thru-hikers find that their rain pants sit untouched in the bottom of their packs until they finally get sick of the dead weight and mail them home.
Because it’s basically a single compartment stuff bag, I did have to make sure the items inside were distributed properly. I have used the hydration compartment for items like my iPad. I’ve carried it in bad weather, including rain and snow.
This pack will make great for a day at the beach with an extra change of clothes, flip flops, keys, tanning oil, towel and a iPod or stuff your lightweight sleeping bag and a jacket. This chair does run on the heavier side, at 17.5 pounds, which is 5 pounds heavier than the Freestyle Rocker. Which makes it a little less likely that you’ll carry it anywhere that requires a fair amount of walking.
This jacket is on the more expensive end of the spectrum, but it’s significantly lighter than similarly priced offerings. The Versalite has two side pockets, generous 16.5-inch-long pit zips, a water-resistant zipper, reflective details, and an adjustable hood, cuffs, and hemline. The arms are slightly articulated to improve ease of movement. The Versalite is cut from a single, continuous piece of fabric to minimize seams, improving the jacket’s waterproofness and durability. I carried this daypack back n forth on a trail to the shower while camping.
Wet weather is common to the Ozark climate, especially in late spring through summer, and fosters a breeding ground for bugs, mosquitos, and ticks. Consider bringing waterproof shoes and treating your clothes ahead of time with permethrin to repel insects. In the colder seasons insulating layers are a must, and a good rain shell for you and rain fly for your tent are necessary year-round.
