F. Goodrich sold many
different products including Schwinn bicycles. In one notable conversation with
his marketing team, Frank W. Schwinn said, “I guess you’re going to lose me
that (B. F. Goodrich) account.” At the time B. F. Goodrich had 1700 different locations selling Schwinn bicycles. He also was friends with Alfred Sloan of
General Motors who had developed a single-brand dealership model for selling
cars. He accepted the advice of his younger
managers and the “Authorized Schwinn Dealer” was born.
A young Edward
Schwinn, Jr. had created a youth movement among Schwinn management bringing in financial
specialists that had sometimes limited experience in manufacturing. Looking back, Schwinn had suffered from a thousand cuts during
the 1980s. This
included the closing of a longtime factory in Chicago, starting a new factory
in Greenville, Mississippi, buying a 40 percent share of a plant in Hungary,
and purchasing a one-third interest in a factory in Hong Kong. Spurred by the
era of globalization, by the end of the decade Schwinn outsourced most of its manufacturing
to Asia.

With a partner, he purchased the custom manufacturing Paramount factory in Waterford, Wisconsin, His company still makes high-end bicycles today under the Waterford name. Over the years, Schwinn has empowered millions of people, earning a special place in the hearts and minds of generations of riders. Sometime in the 1970’s, the Schwinn Chicago factory was organized by the United Auto Workers union, who felt that bicycle factory workers should be paid on the same scale as automotive workers. Unfortunately, the realities of the marketplace didn’t agree, and Schwinn closed the factory, transferring most production to Japan (Panasonic) and Taiwan (Giant). Schwinn also built a factory in Greenville, Mississippi, but it didn’t last, and even bought a factory in Hungary, but the deal fell through, and Schwinn never imported any Hungarian bikes to the U.S.
