Most of Makita’s 18V and 18V-form factor XGT cordless drills and hammer drills have similar handle grip proportions. The corded drill is ideal for jobs that require high power and electrical autonomy that battery drills cannot provide. It can easily drive them to their full depth with just a bit of pressure. It also offers a decent amount of control when it comes to getting the screw heads flush, though we did find a few other drills that were just a bit better in this regard. The adjustable clutch has 21 different torque settings, makita circular saw making it easy to set not to overdrive or strip any fasteners. Unfortunately, we found the performance of the Makita XFD14Z plummeted with the large hole saw compared to other top-ranked drills. This drill did manage to achieve the full depth of the hole saw but struggled in its higher gear.

This drill easily drove the large lag screw to the full depth, making it about half of the way in high gear, then easily finished it off in the lower gear. This test was through a 2×4 into a 4×4 on end, with an appropriate pilot hole drilled. Some nice features about the Makita 18V LXT Brushless Cordless Drill are the included clamp-on handle and the shorter length. The clamp-on handle makes it easier to hold the drill when using larger drill bits, and the shorter length can be very handy when using the drill in more confined areas. I’m having difficulty figuring out which model I should get though – there are several models and I can’t find any concise and up-to-date guides on what the differences are between eachother. I’m buying my first cordless combi drill and after makita circular saw doing some research it seems like what would fit my needs would be an 18v drill – and I’d like to go with Makita. This 18-volt Makita has a 1/2 inch chuck and offers two speed ranges. It is sold with 2 Li-ion batteries and has a 3 year warranty. I use the higher of the two values, 130 Nm, in the chart below, as the maximum tightening torque. This drill got off to a fantastic start with the 1-inch paddle bit.
