Steel wool and a coil of asbestos “rope” inside the globe rest kept dust from clogging the air intake and fuel from dripping on the floor. These lanterns are in Jerry Engbring’s collection. The 5 hour battery life on high setting (400 lumens) is probably one of the best features of the Coleman rechargeable lantern. My biggest issue is that after the sun goes down, campers often will turn their lanterns on lower settings as not much light is needed. So a low setting with long battery life is great. This allows you to bring many lanterns on a week long trip and not worry about charging all week.

The Coleman will not make it through a week long camping trip unless you use it sparingly. If you need a lantern that burns really, really brightly, this is your product. It’s a large, heavy propane lantern that can put out some heat.

We lit campfires, cooked, played board games, had parties, and even chopped wood on moonless nights with this lantern. During one of our parties, we put the Northstar near Grandma when she was chilly. This lantern does make a bit of a hissing sound when it is lit, and when the fuel is about to run out it makes a rather loud whistling noise. Light a match or lighter and hold it below the mantle(s). Open the valve one-quarter turn and wait for the mantle(s) to ignite. Install a new mantle or mantles on your lantern.

This “richness of knowledge” comes from those that come here and share what they know. Where will you vacation next with this Coleman Lantern LT Series travel trailer? You can even escape to the cool night air underneath the 16′ power awning with LED patio light that will illuminate the dark sky while the kiddos sit around the campfire. It’s a largely obsolete measurement of light output.

I can bring it right into the camper without it smelling up the place like gas. These Rayovacs are a good, long lasting battery, but are also affordable. You could spend more on name brands like Energizer or Duracell, coleman lantern but I think these work just fine. The batteries I bought are Rayovac High Energy D cell batteries from Walmart for $5.97 a four pack. I needed two of these, so that costs approximately $12 per refill.

We were hanging around drinking coffee on a chilly November day at Old Mill Stream Campground in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania when he asked a fateful question. Would I want to go with him to the Coleman outlet store nearby? He needed a new globe for one of his gas powered lanterns. I thought the propane lantern was going to be my favorite. It turned out to be such a pain to use, that I don’t use it much anymore.

These lamps, notably ‘The Efficient’ Pendant Arc lamp No. 6, were manufactured by Irby & Gilliland in Memphis, Tennessee. One nice feature to note is that the Coleman is one of the only rechargeable lanterns that came with its own plug in block. The block and cable fit nicely in a screw on compartment on the bottom of the lantern. When you think of Coleman, many people think of entry level camping gear. And honestly, that is exactly what the Coleman Rechargeable Lantern is, an entry level rechargeable lantern with a mid level price point. You can still receive delivery on qualifying items for a fee.

It typically started right up during our testing period where we used it nearly every single night. Just turn the fuel knob and press the red button and it lights instantly. It was easy to initially assemble and installing the mantle wasn’t too much trouble, but does take a bit of patience. It will smoke a lot at first, but then it burns off and shines very brightly. After the initial installation of the mantle, it doesn’t smoke anymore when you relight it. During this testing period, we only had to change the mantle once.

This will help you confirm that your lantern is safe to use, and that it functions as in should. If you need to make any repairs, I will provide links to other sections of this website. Beginning in May, 1927, Coleman changed the design of the integral pump from built-on (above) to built-in, as on this lantern in Ron Becker’s collection. L427s built after this date all have the built-in pump. The propane lantern is so hot, that all the bugs that flew into it, instantly died.

The globe is stabilized in the frame by an upper plate (middle image) and lower spring clips (upper right image). Takao Kimura, whose collection this is in, and I believe this is Model 216, one of three lanterns noted in the Coleman Shipping Records a couple of months after the 7 9 date. Model E20, the Quick-Lite Jumbo Gas Lantern, with a built-on pump (left), and the Quick-Lite Poultry House Lantern, without a pump (right),both featured a 1 gallon fuel tank.
