This chart shows the differences between max tightening and advertised max torque specs for the models of Makita cordless drills and hammer drills discussed above. Let’s take a look at the torque specs for a couple of Makita cordless drills and hammer drills. These specs were sourced from Makita Australia’s product pages for drills with identical designs, features, and max torque values as models marketed in the USA under different model numbers. Many cordless drills have two separate speed ranges, or gear ratios; some newer models have three. The slower speed range peaks at about 400 revolutions per minute (rpm) and provides increased torque (twisting force) for driving large screws. A higher speed range that reaches about 1,500 rpm or more is well suited for rapid drilling.
The drilling time was a little longer than other drills we used, but still very smooth compared to the others. Before I even had the chance to unbox the Makita XPH07T, the first thing I noticed was the length of the side handle. Makita has been intentional with the ratio of torque to handle length in an effort to keep the tool under greater control. While it may be a little disconcerting or even the punch line of jokes, it really does lead to a more stable drilling experience under load.
I haven’t opened the drill to compare the internals of the two. Having a well-balanced tool reduces fatigue and the risk of harm during extended periods of use on the job site. Makita’s handle has a great textured rubber over-mold that provides comfort while operating. Makita has been producing high-quality professional tools for more than a century.

Where some users may want to see the hammer drill improve is in weight. However, I’ll take the extra weight if it means I’d have to trade off some of the durability or smooth drilling. While I was able to get through the cut, it stopped several times on the way. The peak torque value is 0.714% higher than the max tightening torque – that’s very close agreement. Nm refers to Newton meters, a metric system measure of torque. Lock torque seems to be akin to “stall” torque, which usually isn’t used to describe cordless drill performance. Basically, it seems that the drill doesn’t come with a side handle because it doesn’t deliver anywhere close to 970 in-lbs of fastening torque.
