Peterson of Dublin smoking pipes

The System Pipe is still a consistent top seller for Peterson. Peterson pipes create many styles and shapes and uses many different materials, ranging from the traditional briar to exclusive gold bands on some special edition pipes. In my humble opinion, Peterson have been consistent throughout their production of higher end pipes, in replicating a tradition of Celtic quality, at very reasonable prices. These are amongst the most attractive and collectable pipes in the Peterson range of pipe issues. Prices start at around $200 and rise to $800 for the Gold versions.

This one is an apple shaped pipe that has facets around the bowl and shank. The rim top is flumed as was the style of the 60s and 70s. It came to us from the estate of Anglican minister that was a great friend of mine here in Canada.

They soon made a name for themselves making and selling quality Meerschaum and Briar Root pipes. One day Charles Peterson walked into the Kapp Brothers’ Grafton Street premises armed with a revolutionary tobacco pipe and peterson pipes ambitious plans for the future. Peterson suggested that the brothers go into partnership with him to turn his smoking pipe into the world’s best briar pipe. They agreed and the company was renamed Kapp & Peterson.

The business was then inherited by their 10 and 12 year old sons and was renamed Kapp Brothers after executors were appointed. Charles Peterson by then was the lead craftsman and managed the business on behalf of Fredrick peterson pipes and his wife’s executors until the boys came of age. When the Kapp brothers did eventually come of age, Alfred Kapp and Charles Peterson bought out Christian’s shareholding and renamed the business Kapp & Peterson.

As for the aesthetics and ergonomics, I find some shapes much more attractive than others. Favourites for me are the 1s, 2s, 3s, the Mark Twains and the Darwin deluxe. As far as value and cost is concerned, for the excellent quality finish, these are competitively priced at around $135 to $250 depending on size and briar grade. Taking inspiration from Celtic art, stretching back over 1000 years. Peterson have created this series of pipes, the main feature of which, is the unique Celtic Knot design on the hallmarked sterling silver band.

I was able to assess that it was equal distance from the tenon end and the button end – dead center in the stem, just before the bend. Yesterday a friend stopped by with a pipe he wanted me to have a look at and “spruce up” for him. He arrived in the heat of the day just before 5pm which is when it seems to be the hottest time here in Vancouver.
