At only 56 sq ft, this will be tight quarters, and should the rain come, spending a full day in this tent will test everyone’s strength. The Cabin is the perfect kids’ tent, parent tent, or gear tent, but you only get to choose one. Beyond that, it’s really just a budget tent that’s lacking in bells and whistles, along with less flashy inclusions—such as ventilation, better weatherproofing, and a second door—that would definitely boost its value. The Mineral King 3’s fly attaches intuitively with plastic buckles and has well-placed guy tabs. You can secure the fly to the poles with Velcro ties underneath the fly, so that the extra lines anchored the whole tent, not just the thin protective fabric, but we only needed to do so in very windy conditions. The armrests are technically adjustable, though they are only attached through round discs, making it easy to accidentally push them down with your elbow during a routine readjustment. Coleman advertises this chair as having a headrest, which we think is a bit of a stretch. The back of the chair does go up behind where a head could theoretically be (based on height and posture). However, unless you hit the exact right position, the unsupported fabric does very little to hold your head up. Another close Stansport model, the Regulated Propane Stove, was once an upgrade pick but has been plagued by stock issues. We would also like to examine single-burner butane designs—similar to what you’d find at some Korean restaurants—such as the Kovea Cube and the Iwatani 35FW Butane Stove. While cooking, the Cascade can hold a 12-inch pan and a 10-inch pan side by side, same as the Classic. With 22,000 Btu (11,000 Btu from each burner), it produces a touch more heat than our top pick—not all that much for a stove that costs twice the price. We brought them to the beach to see how they would work in sustained winds.
While it’s not technically waterproof, it does come with two protective awnings that cover both windows, and I’ve never had rain or dew seep in. In terms of wind, I’ve never camped in a tornado, but I have camped in 25 mph winds and had no trouble. According to Coleman, the tent’s frame is built to withstand winds of up to 35 mph. While I wouldn’t recommend this tent for winter (it’s a three-season tent), it has enough ventilation for hot summer days, and is warm enough for mild autumn and spring nights. I’m a lifelong camper — I practically lived in forts when I was a kid — and these days, I spend more time tent camping than ever since I test gear for Kampgrounds of America. And because I’m no longer a kid who has all the time in the world, I appreciate a tent I can construct in 10 minutes or less.
