We had to travel about 50 yards in the unkempt grass to reach where we wanted to settle in and the huge plastic wheels made pulling the grill effortless. Simply slide the wheel end out first, lower it to the ground with the handle, grab the handle of the other end of the grill and off you go. As we’ve come to expect from Weber, The Traveler weber portable gas grill is a very intentionally built grill that checks all the boxes in terms of quality. Most of the grill, including the frame and hood were pre-assembled. It was a really intuitive assembly so I didn’t need the instructions. In this review, I’ll run through my experience cooking on the Weber Traveller, both at home and on the road.
I have a lot of experience with the Q Series grills and, while I am a big fan of the Q series, there are a few things that could be improved. In fact, when I was shopping for a new grill I took a hard look at this one at Costco but bought another Weber model instead. The Weber Q2200 is slightly larger than my Q1200 and slightly smaller than my Q3200 and just about the same size as my Weber Traveler. In 1999 they opened a second location in Easton, PA leasing a space from a nursery company.
Savor the journey with backyard quality food, no matter where the adventure takes you. One of the only problems encountered was correctly positioning the grates. Still, we found it heated quickly and was ready to cook in 10 minutes after adding lit charcoal from a chimney, while side vents gave us greater control over lower-temperature cooking. Cooking tests showed good caramelization and even cooking of meats and vegetables, with the heat concentrated at the center of the grill.
Her expertise builds on a lifelong career in the culinary world—from a restaurant cook and caterer to a food editor at Martha Stewart. She is perfectly happy to leave all that behind to be a full-time kitchen-gear nerd. The tiny Cuisinart CGG-180T Petite Gourmet Portable Tabletop Gas Grill suffered major flare-ups when cooking burgers and turned into a raging grease fire when cooking chicken pieces. Everything we cooked on this grill had a dark, sooty film and tasted like torched fat. For one, the Grill2Go X200 has a maximum 9,500 Btu output, versus the Weber Q 1200’s 8,500 Btu.
Grill a quick afternoon lunch of burgers and hotdogs, or a fish fillet for family dinner. On the flip side, the Traveler is less portable than the brand would have you believe in its flashy promotional videos. It’s heavier than any other portable grill I’ve tested and I would categorize the Traveler as a semi-portable grill and not a truly portable grill.
This could be a good starter grill for someone who wants to try grilling but doesn’t want to make a large commitment to the endeavor. Its biggest drawbacks are wobbly legs, even when ensuring that the attachment hardware is fully tightened, and visible air gaps in the lid that limit the ability to control the temperature. The NOMAD is sleek but has few frills and is all about functionality.
In our tests, the Grill2Go X200 produced intense heat that was ideal for searing steaks but had us battling some flare-ups when cooking chicken pieces. Although we wouldn’t want to use it as a primary patio grill, it’s a decent dedicated portable grill for camping and tailgating. If you want a lighter, more compact propane grill, the Char-Broil Grill2Go X200 Portable Gas Grill is designed for one-handed toting. It’s slightly larger than a briefcase and weighs 10 pounds less than our top pick, but it holds the same amount of food—about six burgers. The Weber Traveler grill is specially designed for an easy, one-handed setup and fold down. The grill is also attached to the cart so that you’re up and grilling in no time.
