Because of the extra paper tray, the Epson can hold a large amount of paper for use. It prints fast too — the fastest in our test, though the scanning is a little slow. The graphic, text and webpage text were all excellent, though the image quality on glossy paper was only good. This is a workhorse though, designed for high-volume text, not imagery.
It may well be cheaper to print your photos at home as opposed to using some online or locally-based printing service. I love a tool that is for one purpose, and it does that purpose almost perfectly. If you’re printing more than 100 pages a month, then yes, it likely is a good deal.
The M479fdw features secure boot, firmware integrity, and runtime code integrity to ensure that the printer is drastically less likely to be hijacked by bad actors. (That sounds absurd, but it has happened.) It also allows for PIN-encrypted print jobs, so you can make sure that no one else is intercepting your documents. And role-based access control for multiuser environments allows you to choose who can access which printer features. If your work involves sensitive material, these are legitimately helpful additions.

Still, the MFC-J4335DW printed glossy photos with a sharpness and a realistic saturation and contrast level that rivaled results from printers twice the price. But it fell flat at producing seamless image prints on copy paper, and it often created banding, or horizontal lines across the page, which is a common defect among inkjet printers.
