In need of e-commerce and digital marketing expertise, we created an intuitive digital experience and brand new look for Schwinn. The rear brake hose can kink and break when schwinn tricycle turning the handlebars causing the rider to lose control of the bike, posing a crash hazard. Pacific Cycle has received 37 reports of cracks in the bike’s downtube.
Filling the Shinola contract will strain
the capacity of the welders, brazers and shippers working in the cluttered
Waterford plant. The company’s reputation earned it the business, according to
Sky Yaeger, an industry veteran and the design leader for Shinola. Most of the companies in the U.S.-based
group measure their annual production in the hundreds. Waterford produces about
2,000 to 2,500 frames each year, and Schwinn cautiously reveals a total revenue
figure of $1 million to $2 million.
The limited run of Paramounts and the
foundation of the Waterford and Gunnar models connect the company to its
lineage as an offspring of the once-dominant Schwinn line. That’s about the number of bikes
that Waterford now produces in a year. This is unfortunate news for (arguably) America’s most recognizable bike brand, but not all that surprising. The problems started in the 1980s when Schwinn was facing some internal labor troubles and increased competition from other global manufacturers.

Judith Crown, who is a senior correspondent for BusinessWeek in Chicago and worked for Crain’s Chicago Business, started the book in 1992 after she heard that Schwinn was in serious financial trouble. With Glenn Coleman from Crain’s New York Business, they started investigating the reasons for the turmoil of America’s most notorious cycling brand. We also pulled statistics from a 2022 Sports & Fitness Industry Association report on stationary cycling to see how many people are actively engaged in this type of exercise.
The book is illustrated with photographs of the factory, the Schwinn racing teams, and the bicycles the company produced . The Schwinn Bicycle Company emerged during the bicycle boom of the 1890s, a period where over 200 cycle manufacturers and small shops operated in Chicago alone. The company began schwinn mountain bike operations in a factory at the northwest corner of Peoria and Lake Streets in Chicago. With the collapse of the bicycle market around the turn of the century, the company purchased March-Davis, a competitor which was operating on what was then the city’s far west side, and moved operations there.
