Schwinn Coston CE E-Bike Review: A Double-Edged Sword

I’ve been using an electric bike and a shoulder bag for most of my shopping “can you grab me XYZ from Target” runs. Speaking of which, check out my video below to see the bike’s performance and features in action, including those cool frame lights. Over the years, Schwinn has empowered millions of people, earning a special place in the hearts and minds of generations of riders. We have spent over a century building the bicycle industry into what it is today, and we’re not done yet. Electric bikes put extra power behind every pedal so you can ride farther, take on bigger hills, and enjoy cycling more than ever before. Finally, if an electric bike comes with an app — as is becoming increasingly common— we’ll test it out too, to see how easy it is to use, and how well it works with the bike itself.

Few are as fun and useful as what Specialized has made with the Globe Haul ST. And a longer-than-usual rack, the Blix Dubbel is a utility bike that can double as a child carrier. Riders with long commutes will love that it can be ordered with two batteries. In a fast-growing sea of products, how did we make our picks for the best e-bikes? The answer to this question varies depending on the bike and category. But in every case, these e-bikes were picked through consensus among our team of expert e-bike testers.

This is a very full-featured commuter with great lines, a powerful motor, front suspension and includes a commute-ready package with fenders, lights and rear rack. A range of up to 45 miles makes this bike worthy of day-long excursions, and it folds up easily for storage or transit. There are a few things to know about the motor itself in action. First, if you stop pedaling, after a few seconds, the pedal assist will shut down — until you begin pedaling again, which will kick it back on.

But once in the saddle, I found the fit to be correct. I am 5’7″ and the bike fit me fine with the seat post in the lowest position, so it’s likely riders slightly taller could also use this size. I had my 5’3″ daughter try the bike, and she found it too tall for her. The lithium ion battery pack weighs 6 pounds and is about 15 inches long by 6 inches wide.

E-bike can be difficult for smaller riders to manage as well as elderly riders who may have lost strength; we appreciate an e-bike with such a broad appeal. We tested both the step-through and high-step versions of the RadCity Plus’ frame and in both brake tests the RadCity was among the top performers in bikes we’ve ever tested. The NUTT hydraulic disk brakes with 180mm rotors perform very well and seem like the right spec choice. Rad Power Bikes really overhauled the latest iteration of their uber-popular commuter. The RadCity 5 Plus came equipped with a host of new parts on top of a freshly redesigned look. We were such fans of how the new RadCity came together that it easily sprang to our minds to be included on our list of best electric bikes.

I wonder if you have a 500w motor wouldn’t you need a 500w battery? I find also for the first month I had it and I mostly use the peddle assist and only use the throttle when crossing streets. I live in Florida so mostly everything is flat no hills. Yet, I am noticing lately my battery draining by one bar mongoose bmx after only 5 miles usage. Another problem is condensation gets in the display module during hot humid days but, it eventually burns off. Overall operation runs fine and on peddle assist I can run it up to almost 28 mph however, it doesn’t take long until the battery starts losing its charge by a few bars.

I’m not about to pedal around in the lightest pedal assist setting all day, especially since this isn’t a high power e-bike to begin with. So if you’re using liberal throttle, keep in mind that you’re going to wind schwinn mountain bicycles up with limited range. Ride up to 20 MPH with the 250-watt brushless geared hub drive pedal assist motor that gives you a boost while you pedal. Choose from several levels of assistance or use the throttle instead.

Most use lithium-ion battery technology, which is still pricey, and including it could mean cutting corners elsewhere if the overall price is that low. At $1,399, the Aventon Pace 350 gets close, but our test revealed it’s not too cheap to be high quality. The Class 2 e-bike tops the assistance out at 20 mph, whether you get there by pedal-assist or a throttle. The motor assist on this bike is purely pedal assist, though it’s more fair to call it “pedals are moving, motor is on” – since that what it seems to be. Start pedaling, and the motor will chime in at some power, mostly dependent on what you’ve set on the handlebar control. It pretty much does that until you stop pedaling or hit a brake lever.
