MacBaren has a full line of Captain Black inspired tobaccos which are usually ranked higher than the original, all under the Seven Seas line. I did have Seven Seas Original years ago and my general tasting notes are fairly similar but I can note that the mechanics of the MacBaren version was vastly superior. Captain Black Gold smells like cigarettes which you tried to cover up with dollar store vanilla body spray. Captain Black Gold is much more natural in aroma, hay, a hint of vanilla, and bit of an ammonia off-note.
FLAVOR PROGRESSIONCaptain Black Original has fairly consistent vanilla-rum-lemon-vinegar-hay profile up to the last quarter when the spiced rum takes over. SMOKE & ROOM NOTEThe heavy cavendish component gives all of these tobaccos a silky mouthfeel, but the smoke is strangely thin. Captain Black Gold is well not quite gold, but in that direction. Most distinctly its much finer in cut than the other two Captain Black products reviewed here.
Captain Black itself made its first appearance in a 1956 catalog, where it was touted as ‘slightly aromatic, slow burning & pleasant,’ and sold for 25 cents per ounce. Tobacco general is offering another great value selection on all of its Captain Black pipe tobacco products to keep the consumer’s mind keen for decision-making and delighted with the choices available at hand. Try Captain Black pipe tobacco now and indulge in a world of intricate, wonder-filled redolence. In the last week I have smoked three different versions of Captain Black in Corn Cob Pipes and in a Savinelli Venezia and an Aldo Velani Volcano.
Captain Black Gold is an excellent option for a nice, plain old smoke. Its simplicity and room note make this a classic standby for everyday smoke. This tobacco blend is a favorite of many pipe smokers due to its unique, complex flavor.
There’s also a light vinegar and salt, bringing this somewhat close to Captain Black Original. A return of cherry lip gloss joins in with sugary-vanilla-salt-lemon-vinegar. Captain Black Pipe Tobaccos are the world’s largest selling pipe blends and have been for well over 50 years. These Captain Black blends started the full-aromatic craze with their full, overwhelmingly pleasant aromas. Try these incredibly flavorful chacom tobacco pipes mixtures like the subtly sweet Captain Black Royal or Gold, the delightfully fruity Captain Black Cherry, that will please everyone in the room with their enticing aromas.
The added humectant means you can keep this out for several weeks before you need to be concerned about this drying out excessively. Captain Black has stuck to a basic look for the last seven decades, a solid color background which indicates which blend it is, with a black silhouette of a tall ship. It’s an iconic package that is easy to recognize for anyone who has been in the hobby for awhile. The latest iteration gives us a simplified, almost clip art rendition of the three-master, which gives it a stripped down, timeless appearance. Founded in 2012, we are the largest cigar store franchise in the Dominican Republic.
Captain Black Pipe tobacco is a blend created during a time when pipe smoking was far more prevalent than any other form of tobacco smoking. Released in 1956, Captain Black pipe tobacco became and remains among the best-selling pipe tobaccos in the United States. Captain Black is suitable for both a beginner and experienced pipe smoker, depending on the pipe tobacco you choose. For many pipe smokers, Captain Black’s blends represent the archetype of Aromatic mixtures, redolent of nostalgia and conjuring memories of times when pipe-smoking was more commonplace in society.
The Gold if anything burned too well, which added to the tongue bite I’m sure. I can’t tell if the nip on my captain black tobacco tongue is pepper from the Virginia or tongue bite. It sweetens up with more salt and a strong lemon zest.
I smoked Captain Black Regular (white package), Captain Black Gold (gold package) and Captain Black Royal (dark blue package). The other two versions that I didn’t smoke are Captain Black Light chacom tobacco pipes (light blue package) and Captain Black Cherry (red package). You usually find Captain Black at various chain stores that sell pipe tobacco such as CVS Drug Stores, Walmart and other chains.
