Some adventures are about taking your time and drinking in your surroundings, others are about getting there fast. This bike is designed for lightweight bike-packing, able to tackle ultra-distances on mixed terrain. Essentially an aluminium version of the Croix de Fer, the CDA features a similar plethora of mounts and wide clearances but comes in at a significantly lower price. Part of this is down to the different frame material, but cheaper components are also a factor. Other bikes might have the specificity to perform better in a single one of these uses, but very few bikes would be able to perform as well as the Croix de Fer in all of them. It is the combination of a vast array of mounts, a robust steel frame and wide tyre clearances that allow this bike to be such a jack of all trades.
Genesis bikes became renowned for their use of steel tubing and ethos for function over form. Finally, the Columbia Rd is a beautiful step-through with a low maintenance and practical 8-speed internal hubgear. Perfect for pootling around town, plus the twin top tube adds a touch of elegance. For commuters and city-dwellers, Genesis has several bikes to choose from. Finally, if you want to build your absolute dream machine, the Volare and Volare Disc framesets are available in both Reynolds 853 and 931 tubing options. Next up is the endurance-focused Zeal, which is full carbon, so you can ride longer and faster with less effort.
The bikes are available either with rim brakes or hydraulic discs, but there is only one spec level with these bikes. The rim brake version can take tyres up to 28c, whereas the disc version can handle 30c. With its steel frame and carbon fork, asymmetrical chainstays and 650b wheels with gargantuan 50c tyres, it’s perfect if you want a bike that will take you anywhere, but don’t want a mountain bike. The Genesis bike’s aluminium frame is not only strong but also durable. Almost the antithesis of the Day One, the Flyer is sublime in its simplicity.

We’ve got to say, though, that we’ve never seen anything like the head tube on Adam Blythe’s bike. We showed you 3T’s Strada ICR a couple of weeks ago, with a ‘nose’ extending forwards at the front of the head tube. 3T’s goal was to hide the cables internally while keeping the head tube narrow and aerodynamically efficient rather than wide and bulky.
The frame appears to be a Genesis Zero Disc – a model that’s no longer in the range – that has had an extension up front. Although Blythe says that he loves the look, people on social media have been less complimentary. The Genesis Day One was the name of the company’s first flat-bar road bike, which was introduced in 2001. An avid cyclist, Ignaz Schwinn met Adolf Arnold in Chicago in the 1890s while working as a machinist. After working in numerous genesis bicycles factories for a few years, the pair decided to start their own bike company. Genesis invented gravel bikes, and the Vin Cox set a Guinness World Record for the fastest bike around the world. Despite designing all of our bikes in-house in Milton Keynes, we’re lucky to be able to produce them in world-class factories in Vietnam and Indonesia.
