Coleman Sundome 6 Person Dome Tent 2000036889

Coleman also offers the Sundome 4, which we think is ideal for two campers and a dog. In terms of windows, you’ll find two large mesh panels on the upper half of the side walls as well as smaller, closeable windows on the back wall and at the top of the front door. The panels provide excellent views on cloudless nights, but these will be lost with the attached rainfly.

It will be great for light to medium duty use, but is not a heavy duty camper. It also comes with a fantastic vestibule with a door that can be propped up to form an awning. The sheltered living space in this tent is the advantage it has over the Coleman Sundome. This tent can be put up fast and easily thanks to the simple three-pole design. Two poles run diagonally between corners to give the body of the tent it’s dome-shape.

Tent poles are constructed of fiberglass, which is heavier than their lightweight aluminum counterparts. The   2’s tent body and fly material seemed fairly durable. The bathtub floor is thicker and more rigid than floors of other tents I own. While I didn’t take a sharp stick and try to recreate a Houston mosquito trying to get inside, the bug mesh felt pretty sturdy. This Coleman Sundome 2 person tent review is about an enormously popular tent.

I’m not a fiberglass hater, but these are a little on the thin side. I can see it being easy to form cracks and break, although in over a year of use I haven’t done either as of yet. I still carry materials to make a repair though, just in case. I haven’t got caught in a strong storm yet in this tent, but I imagine it will be easy for the wind to blow the tent in on itself because of the poles. The low wide profile and included guylines hold up well in the wind, and the tent floor has a tub design.

Having said that, most casual campers who take decent care of their gear should see many summers of camping with the Sundome. We tested the six-person version of the Coleman Sundome, which offers a healthy 10 feet x 10 feet of floor area. To gauge livability, we brought along two adults, a portable crib, and a dog, and found that the Sundome 6 provided more than enough room for summertime adventures. We were able to move around comfortably, the sleeping space easily accommodated the aforementioned crib and a double-wide, 52-inch mat, and the generous amount of mesh made for an airy feel overall. In practice, we almost always recommend sizing up your tent, and we think the Sundome 6 work bests with groups of three to four people.

From the netting to the poles to the rainfly, many of the main components of this tent are not built to last. For example, the string that connects the pole sections together broke on our first pitch. Long story short, if you do decide to go with the Sundome, just be sure to have a pole patch kit available. With less space than other 4-person tents, it could be a little cramped. We think if you are going camping for the first time or even if not and are looking for that perfect camping tent that will last for almost all your outdoor trips this is it.

While we love the idea of setting up a tent super fast, we’re not convinced the Instant Cabin is worth the extra cost and questionable rain protection. Another Kelty tent to have on your radar is their Tallboy 6. It’s a step up in price from the Discovery above at $230, but you do get a number of upgrades, including a lighter coleman ice chest weight (14 lbs. 1 oz.), taller peak height (72 in.), and smaller packed size. The Kelty uses slightly higher-quality materials than the Sundome, but we find it hard to justify spending more for less space and similar overall performance. Unfortunately, the lack of storage options continues to the exterior of the Sundome 6.
