You need around 10 watts of power for every square foot of room you want to heat. So, you’d need a 1,000-watt heater for a 150-square-foot room. It comes with a timer feature that lets you set it to shut off after the timer runs out. This isn’t as sophisticated as having a programmable thermostat – you’ll need to set the timer each time you want it to shut off, and you can’t set it to turn on or turn up when the timer runs out. But it means, for example, you can set it to run at night in your bedroom while you’re sleeping, and it will go off automatically in the morning after you leave.
Unfortunately, we have quite a few gripes with the overall performance of this model. First and foremost, it doesn’t do well in larger spaces such as a living room. Our panel of judges found that the channel lasko tower heater of air produced by the Designer Series felt more like a cold breeze than a blanket of warmth and that it isn’t very good at projecting air of any temperature over any sort of substantial distance.
At the end of summer and into early fall, although the weather isn’t cold by any means, my New England home gets a little chilly late at night and in the morning. For safe air quality, these heaters should only be used in well-ventilated areas equipped with carbon monoxide alarms. Typically, these are wall-mounted heaters designed to be installed with proper ventilation by a licensed lasko tower heater contractor. Some heaters are powered by propane gas tanks, similar to those used for gas grills. Propane heaters should not be used indoors without adequate ventilation, as they can pose a carbon monoxide hazard.
Plus, it can heat an entire basement and comes with a three-year warranty! That high current is why you should never use an extension cord with a space heater. Many of the pictures you see in critical reviews claiming that a space heater “caught on fire” appear to be from people overloading an extension cord by plugging a space heater into it. The instructions for every space heater we’ve ever seen warn against this. I tell you this from a personal perspective based on a particularly fiery experience involving a Marshall amplifier, an old power strip, and a space heater. Don’t worry; no one was hurt, and nothing was damaged except for the power strip and my pride.
If you think you may need a new heater, don’t wait for the cold weather to hit. Retailers usually stock space heaters seasonally, so prices and availability can fluctuate over the colder months. Most tower heaters oscillate from left to right to blow hot air over a wider area and warm up more of your space. However, if you only need to warm yourself while stationary, you can turn the oscillation off.
