Electric Bikes

Keep in mind – Almost all bikes, whether electric or not, are made overseas. This does not mean that these bikes are bad (some of them are), but some of these companies make the best bikes in the world. Often when the big guys eat the little guys they dissolve the smaller company. Other times, if the company has a good brand then they will keep the name and outsource the production. In other words, s are now made in China.

Respectfully, most of the e-bikes you find online come from companies with alphabet-soup for names that may sell just as many portable batteries as they do e-bikes. The battery locks in under the frame of the bike, and the front wheel/fender tended to get in the way when removing or reinstalling the battery. One feature I liked was a secondary tab you need to retract to remove the battery.

Press and hold the “+” button for three seconds to switch on the headlight. The Coston DX does have a flat-out great lighting system, with a bright headlight, taillight, and running light beneath the central frame that provides solid surrounding visibility. It also has a hidden pocket in the seat, which is a pretty neat way to store your phone, keys, and other small items. Not only do you get typical head and taillights, but you also have LED frame lights built into the sides of the battery. That adds a nice nighttime glow to the bike mongoose excursion to give you better side visibility – an area where most bikes are lacking. For seniors, we recommend an e-bike with a step-thru frame and upright riding position.

One of the most affordable e-bikes right now is Rad Power’s RadMission, a city bike with commuter potential. For $899, you get a stripped-down single-speed that moves along at 20 mph with a throttle to help you get up to speed or the top of punchy hills. You also get integrated lights and a bell and a long list of options to add. The Rad Power–branded hub motor drive unit that delivers 50Nm of torque, and a 504Wh battery.

That includes charging it overnight in the other room while you’re sleeping. If you are charging your ebike, only use the provided charger, and plug it directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip. Nolte and Lovell both recommended shoppers pay attention to local ebike incentives. While there is no federal ebike tax credit (yet), states like California, Colorado, Connecticut and others offer ebike tax credits that can save your thousands of dollars. This bike is filled with premium, high-end parts designed with heavy loads in mind.

It runs for up to 45 miles before requiring recharging and charges fully in about 4 hours. A display on the handlebar showcases the power modes and battery info. You’ll need to consider the type of terrain and style of riding you prefer, as well as how far you want to ride before recharging the battery.
