Affordable, and more than capable of cooking up a good meal on the cheap. What really sets these stoves apart from other Coleman offerings (like the Classic) is the cast-iron grates. It wasn’t until 1949 that Coleman advertised that the flat bar could be turned over the top to serve as a towel rack (Stendahl). This Model 395 hotplate is undated but it was made by The Coleman Co. after WWII as Model 391A above. Joe Pagan restored this 3 burner stove which is in his collection. These images are from a 348 stove in John Morris’ collection. The date stamp on this 520 stove is 1944 (lower image, left). Coleman had reduced the number of legs on the model from four (above stoves) to three (this stove) earlier in the war.
Now, this didn’t affect grilling buns or corn, but if you are trying to cram a lot of food onto the griddle, just know the temperature will vary a little. Each time, we packed
the camp stoves in their original boxes for shipping. This test wasn’t perfect, but the rough rides in the back of a mail truck revealed weaknesses in the Everest’s design.
The Mountaineer does have an additional-leg kit, but we didn’t find the pieces helpful (the legs were too short for our needs, and they felt loose when attached). It’s better if you can set this stove
on a table or some kind of camp stand. At one point I had to use the handle of a spoon to pry the case open again. You could fix the problem using a Dremel tool and a grinder, if you have one.
This makes it easy to slide into the crevice of a vehicle or back corner of a gear closet.
