If you’re used to a 10,000-BTU burner and are eyeing a 20,000-BTU-per-burner model like the Camp Chef Everest 2X, we can guarantee you that the difference will be noticeable. If you love to create kitchen-quality or “gourmet” food from scratch in rustic conditions, this is the stove for you. The Mountaineer is larger (at 25¼ by 13¾ by 5¼ inches, it dwarfs our top pick).
The stove stayed upright on my camp table, and it proved sturdy enough to withstand the wind. I felt comfortable enough to keep the heat cranked and the dinner cookin’. It’s summer (mostly), but I still managed to test this stove in less-than-ideal weather when a gusty rain (and then a snowstorm) blew in. Add to that the star feature of this stove — cast iron pot supports and two cast iron attachments — and you’ve got a winner.
If you don’t feel like traveling with matches, you may want to consider a cooking stove that ignites automatically. While camping stoves have traditionally required a little extra help to start up, some newer models have auto-ignition. If this is important to you, factor that into your decision.
It doesn’t have the highest BTUs or boiling times, but it has solid performance in terms of fuel efficiency. For the price, this little gem can satisfy a lot of campers. When you’re using larger pots and pans, a neat feature of this stove is that the lid can lie completely flat, which creates more stovetop room (unlike on the Coleman FyreCadet).
At the base, they’re no different than any other windscreen on any stove. I did much of my testing in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, in up to 30-knot winds. Both stoves did as well as could be expected, though it’s worth noting that no stove will cook well in 30-knot winds. I have two Peak 1 stoves,
both built in the early 1980s, and I won’t buy a new one unless I have no choice. The flame control from simmer to full works perfectly, and that is a huge plus when simmering pasta/sauce for 10 minutes. A 3 burner camp stove like the Coleman Eventemp 3 is perfect for a few different people.
Most tabletop camp stoves, including the Coleman Classic, put out about 20,000 BTUs total. In our Cascade power test, we had no problem quickly boiling a large pot of water to make corn on the cob. The Classic has a great price-to-value ratio but it’s not exactly refined. The new Coleman Cascade Two Burner Camping Stove does pretty much everything better than the Coleman Classic. Depending on your needs, packed size may or may not play a big role in your buying decision.
The poor wind resistance also negated its faster boil time and exceptional simmer function, unless we were cooking in extremely calm weather. If you’re looking for a cheap camping stove that has all the features you need for camp cooking, it’s hard to find a better value than this. The Coleman Classic finished toward the bottom in our tests, though. The two 10,000 BTU burners boiled water in 5 and a half minutes — nearly the slowest of the seven stoves we tested.
The Coleman Peak1™ 2-Burner Stove elevates your cooking by bringing the benefits of cast iron to the stove itself. The cast iron burner is more durable than your average stove, and it’s easy to clean too. Extra burner holes make for more even cooking and a rotary ignition means you can leave the lighter at home. At the end of the trip, pack the stove in the foam carrying case and squeeze it into the smallest spaces thanks to its slim design. Most of the best camping stoves are in the 20,000 to 30,000 BTU range. That gives you plenty of power for quick boil times and high-heat cooking while staying compact and fuel efficient.
Perfect for those times when trail mix just won’t cut it, the Cascade 3-in-1 Camping Stove makes it easy to cook great meals outdoors. The recessed carry handle makes the stove portable so you can bring it to the campsite or park, and its grill and griddle accessories help
you cook up a variety of top-notch food. Its removable cast-iron pan support and aluminized steel cooktop are quick and easy to clean. Perfect for those times when trail mix just won’t cut it, the Cascade Burner Camping Stove makes it easy to cook great meals outdoors.
