For obvious reasons, though, the single-burner options are much lighter and more comfortable to carry, and the freestanding stoves are a bear to haul around. Where the Cascade shines is in the finer control it allows throughout the range of temperatures. Most camping stoves, including our top pick, have a tendency to jump temperatures, from very low to very high, with barely a touch of the hand. Ideally, on a decent home stove, these eggs should cook for 10 to 15 minutes on the lowest possible heat. We brought them to the beach to see
how they would work in sustained winds. We also brought them to a public park to cook up a full breakfast of pancakes, bacon, eggs, and coffee. Initially, to get a baseline for each stove’s general performance, we focused on how quickly they could boil water (similar to the process of many of the sites listed above).
For about $80 this stove comes with two adjustable burners, a slim profile for easy storing, and wind guards. The Coleman’s Two-burner Propane Stove with InstaStart Technology is pretty much as easy as it gets and should happily satisfy most any portable-cooking needs. While a blazing 20,000 BTU burner is great for a spaghetti feed, for items that require a little more finesse you’ll want to make sure the stove has effective simmer control. This requires fuel regulation that doesn’t fluctuate and a flame that remains strong even at low heat.
But it was not widely adopted and was phased out about a year later. Although disposable-bottle refill kits are legal to buy, it remains illegal to commercially transport one-use bottles after they have been refilled. Coleman, on its bottles, expressly recommends not doing this—though some people still do (video). Ideally, the edges would be smoothed and the burrs removed at the factory. So if you have a few tools, you might want to sand down or grind out the sharp corners.
