Typically, there are 4 types of materials used for manufacturing of tent poles – fiberglass, steel, aluminium and carbon fiber. The price, durability, weight and strength of these materials is very different, as well as their intended use. Recently, a friend and I used a Coleman coleman instant tent “Fast Pitch” tent on a mountain biking car camping trip. Although not the same as an Instant tent, the fast pitch design came together very quickly. The Coleman instant tent is waterproof and in my experience does really well in even heavy rains. The instant tent folds into a circle and comes in a zippered storage bag that has two carry handles. There are a lot of great things about the Coleman 2 person pop-up tent that not only make it super easy to transport and set up but also make it a great instant tent overall. We used our 2 person pop up tent regularly for 3 years before we upgraded to a travel trailer and I can tell you right now that I was and still am very impressed with the instant tent overall.
In the setup category, the coleman sundome 6 is a true standout amongst our 2021 review, and we were quite impressed with what it could do. This is a great tent to bring along for the kids or some extra covered storage, but not ideal for the entire family. At only 56 sq ft, this will be tight quarters, and should the rain come, spending a full day in this tent will test everyone’s strength. The Cabin is the perfect kids’ tent, parent tent, or gear tent, but you only get to choose one. I wouldn’t consider this as an instant tent as it takes more time to set up. The poles are not pre-attached, you have to lay them one by one and attach them to the tent body.
The Cabin has three large windows, easy access vents in the ceiling (these are accessible from inside the tent thanks to zippers in the ceiling), and two storage pockets. The only ding on the windows is that they have no ties or way to secure them once opened, so they are left to simply dangle. At 56 sq ft, you can fit two twin air mattresses with about a foot of hallway left or fill the entire tent wall to wall with a full and a twin.
So you will not have issues with condensation in such circumstances. But with the panels on and with closed vents, this is a different story. I would not use such a tent in a very rainy environment with a lot of wind. Note that the panels must be closed if it is raining, so this cannot be a pleasant place if the rain continues for hours. For one, because this is essentially a “wedge” shaped tent, the walls are fairly steep, so there’s not much extra shoulder room inside the shelter. Still, the Hooligan is one of the best-made tents in the Coleman lineup, and also one of the least expensive. Try it out, and if you love it, consider building it up with better components. You have put 5 pads in one row, and the sixth would be separate, oriented along the length of the tent.
Forcing your poles through their sleeves, hanging heavy objects from your tent ceiling, or failing to properly stake and guy out a Coleman tent is a great way to pop a seam.
