Not only are the 5-pound s refillable, but over time it’s also cheaper to refill a reservoir with gas than to constantly buy new disposable bottles. If you love to create kitchen-quality or “gourmet” food from scratch in rustic conditions, this is the stove for you. The Mountaineer is larger (at 25¼ by 13¾ by 5¼ inches, it dwarfs our top pick).
If you’re a novice coleman camp stove cook running around the outdoors store in your town looking for a good camping stove, you may not know where to begin or exactly what kind you want. At times like this, it may be best to stick with the classics, and this Coleman Classic Propane Stove may be just what you need to start out. For a reliable, reasonably powerful cooking solution on a budget, you might not have to look any further than the Coleman Classic. It’s not excess water in the fuel, it happens frequently and consistently with straight Coleman fuel. It’s a poorly vetted re-design issue that was hoped to increase profit margin.
If this is important to you, factor that into your decision. Portability is a top consideration in any camping stove. If you’re hiking, you’ll need a stove that will fit snugly into your pack, while campers can get away with something a little bigger, as long as it can slide into the back of your vehicle.
Note the adjustable height for the grate by raising & lowering the frame uprights . The placement of the four legs on the bottom was scored on the metal before the legs were fastened in place . Coleman made these two Model 520 stoves for the military in WWII. The stove on the left and covered in the right image) was one of perhaps only 1000 made in 1941 and has a nickel plated brass tank and brass fittings. The 520 stove in the middle has a steel tank and fittings and little brass; it is dated 1942. You can see the funnel for the stove in the middle here.
The Triton stove has a built-in handle for easy carrying. Two burners were installed in each case to make the complete stove above. The upper image here is of the top of one of the two 347 burners and the lower image is just of the generator from this alcohol fueled burner. The plate below the generator is stamped with the burner number and the fuel required.
There is also a version that costs roughly $20 more, the coleman camp stove Triton InstaStart, and comes with a Piezo ignition. We like both stoves, and think it really depends if you prefer an automatic ignition or not. The Triton stove can comfortably hold a 12-inch pan and 10-inch next to each other, and its frame will support a fair amount of weight. I had a hefty pot of boiling pasta on one burner and a pan full of searing chicken legs on the other without any issues.
