DEWALT offers a full range of corded and cordless drills to meet every drilling need. Including; stud and joist, 1/2″ – 3/8″ variable speed corded drills, and cordless drills in a range of voltages.

Despite its small size and weight, it’s fully featured, with a hammer setting, two speeds, and 12 clutch positions. Of equal importance is the fact that it managed to drill 43 1-inch holes before its thermal cutoff kicked in. We live in an era where “made in America” tends to be more the exception than the rule. So it was a distinct pleasure to open the Craftsman box and slide out a neatly sewn tool bag bearing an American-made drill driver with two batteries and a charger.

Even with the drill inside, the bag is compact, and you can easily stuff it in a closet or on a basement shelf. In general, 12-volt drills are little, but the DeWalt DCD701F2, with its brushless motor, is downright tiny. From tip to tail, the DeWalt 12-volt is less than 6 inches long; it was the shortest drill we looked at. On our scale it weighed just under 2½ pounds, landing in the midrange of drill weights. But the DeWalt 12-volt’s balance was so nice that, before we weighed the drills, we were convinced it was the lightest one we were testing. The truth is that the Bosch GSR12V-300B22 is almost half a pound lighter.

Ridgid has this nifty little drill bit holder – a small, but nice-to-have feature. I don’t understand why all tool brands don’t include this clever feature on all of their drills. Next, we evaluated and scored the DCD771C2 driving power when setting screws; this is also responsible for 35% of its final score. The DCD771C2 earned a fantastic score, based on its performance at driving in both a countersunk #9 wood screw and a 5″ long, ½” diameter lag screw. Does the drill come by itself, without a battery and a charger, or does it come with one or two batteries, a charger, and maybe a carrying case? For a little more money, some drills have a rapid charger that quickly replenishes the battery to partial charge in minutes.

That’s helpful drilling wood, but even more important drilling steel, where it’s far more difficult to balance the variables of motor speed, bit diameter, and steel hardness and thickness. A really valid power tool is for sure the DCD996T2-QW premium hammer drill driver with 3-speed function and a 920W power output. The electronic clutch with 11 position adjustable torque control ensures an optimised precision when using the tool.

Both have LED lights, but as you can see from the photos, DeWalt’s lights are much brighter and better positioned on both the impact driver and drill/driver. Ridgid’s lights are located at the base dewalt reciprocating saw of the drill, which makes for a dimmer-lit work area. While the light is located at the base of the DeWalt drill/driver (like Ridgid’s), it’s tilted up, lighting the work area substantially.
