Coleman 6 Person Sundome Tent

I was in rush and made mistakes, bought a cheap tool and did not test it before the tour. If you buy a reliable tent you will not have to seam seal it. Pros- Super simple to setup solo, generous sized bag to pack it away in when done, and I found it very comfy for the weather we planned for. (but to be honest, I invested in a sub-zero sleeping bag, so just about anything that keeps the rain of is fine for me).

Our experts test thousands of products each year using thoughtful test plans that bring out key performance differences between competing products. And, to assure complete independence, we buy all the products we test ourselves. Thoughts of camping chairs may conjure up images of $10 specials out front a big-box retailer, but let’s reorient ourselves to a slightly higher standard.

However, if you are just doing the occasional holiday or one weekend a month type of camping, then the Sundome will serve you well. However, like the Sundome the mesh windows in this tent mean that without the rain fly on, users lose all sense of privacy. The floor is also best used with a footprint or trap underneath to make sure it isn’t damaged. The packed size of the 4-person dome tent would be too bulky for backpacking, but is conveniently sized and shaped for car camping. The Coleman Sundome is a basic dome tent, not intended for camping in extreme weather conditions. If you’re heading into heavy winds and rainy nights, you’re best looking for something else.

There is a mesh gear pocket to store things like you wallet and phone in to keep them off the ground. You’ll also find a zippered opening near the door to run an electrical cord through so you can run a fan, or C-PAP machine in my case. A classic dome structure, single door, and vented roof make pitching this tent relatively easy, though we had issues with the rainfly. The floor is also cheap polyethylene material — you will basically be sleeping on a tarp — and we had some pole malfunction right out of the gate.

The dark coleman ice chest also helps keep the tent cooler, which is a nice plus in the hot summer months. Cost-wise, the Dark Room will set you back approximately $30 more compared with the regular Sundome. For this review, we tested the six-person Sundome, which we think is just about ideal for families of three to four people. For smaller groups or those confined by small campsites, Coleman offers three other size options. For groups in the two to three-person range, we think the Sundome four-person should be just about right. If you are camping solo or with a furry friend, we’d recommend opting for the three-person or two-person models.

The Coleman Sundome 3, 7’x7′, dome tent is part of the classic Sundome series of tents from Coleman. The Sundome 3 sleeps 3 happy campers and includes a large door for easy entry/exit with a hooded fly to provide ventilation even in rain. A large rear hooded window also provides airflow for cross ventilation. The coated polyester fabrics on the fly and walls are rugged and durable. Like all Coleman Sundome tents it is easy to set up or take down and features an Electrical Access Port, a ground vent and an interior mesh storage pocket. Make camping easier with the Coleman® Sundome® 4-Person Tent.

The interior of the Sundome 6 measures 10’x10’ with a peak height of 6’ in the center. Although these numbers by themselves would make this tent quite appealing compared to other 6-person tents, the dome-style structure of the Sundome means that there is limited verticality in the wall. As a result, the headroom drops off dramatically if you’re standing anywhere but in the center of the tent. Most campers will find themselves hunching over when traversing much of this tent. There are four rather simple pockets lining the inside of the tent, which is far from ample but still double what you’ll get from Coleman’s Instant Tent 6. There’s also a bit of ventilation thanks to a ground vent at the back that you’ll need to stake for it to remain open.

The sundome would have been a GREAT option for a trip I recently took. I needed a tent that was going to be comfortable for a weekend car camping trip. My backpacking tent is great, but a little on the small side for casual weekend camping trips. No matter where your travels take you, from national parks to backwoods to back porches, a sleeping bag for camping remains a trusty companion. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a cheaper option from a respected outdoor brand.
