I also Scotchguarded the side panels, and have two of them. They increase the importance of staking the canopy down, but help keep rain and sun from coming in the sides. Stands up in the wind and rain if tied down. Will keep bugs out, but the screening is tight, thats why it gets hot. Biggest takeaway is the tent style shelters are more durable than the popup ones. More expensive, but they also last longer while being more weather-tight.
Under the right conditions they are really helpful. If not secured, all it takes is one good wind to take it for a spin down the beach or accross the campground resulting in a pile of tiwsted wreckage. And I really don’t see any difference in quality with the Ozark trail canopies… I should mention, one thing I like about straight leg canopies, aside from the larger coverage area versus slant leg, is that it’s easy to attach side panels. I have two side panels that really come in handy in the weather.
To me, I think “iozark trail instant canopy” would be 10×10 coverage area (100′), which means a “straight leg” is the way to go. I want it to be tall enough that I can walk under it (I’m 6’3″), and I would prefer it to be more sturdy yet lighter. I suppose that aluminum frames would be much lighter. I have an Ozark Trail 10×10 Straight Leg Canopy from Walmart. The steel frame is reasonably sturdy though heavy. The awning fabric is lightweight and required Scotchguard, several layers to avoid mist passing through it in heavy rain. I use it on about half of my trips, and have my doubts as to whether it will stand up to more than a couple more seasons of use.
