There have been comments that the pre-motor filters require frequent cleaning. We have noticed that they get discolored fairly easy but we have not had to clean ours yet. So far we haven’t really noticed any difference in terms of the need to clean filters when comparing the Canister Pet to some of our other full size machines. We created debris from a mixture of split green peas, flax seeds, chili flakes and ground cheerios.

The handle features a rubber grip on top, as well as a control panel. This allows you to switch the vacuum on or off, adjust the power level, and switch between floor types, all from the handle, so there’s no need to bend down to the canister. If we didn’t mention a particular model you’re curious about, we did actually consider it but decided not to recommend it. We came close to recommending the Shark Navigator Swivel Pro NV150 because the dustbin is easy to empty and the handle is comfortable to hold. In our fine-debris pick-up test, however, it picked up less sand and baking soda than any of the other upright models we tested. The plastic latch for the bag door can break, leaving you unable to keep the door closed securely.

It’s long enough to reach curtains, corners and other hard-to-access places. This Miele canister has a simple 4-control dial in the middle of the vacuum, a foot-controlled on shark pet hair vacuum / off pedal and an automatic cord rewind switch. The flexible hose on the Mighty Mite is about 7′ long with a 20′ cords and an extending rigid wand for great maneuverability.

In terms of cleaning performance, the NV352 sucks up most kinds of debris from pretty much any surface, and it picks up significantly more on carpeting, compared with other models we looked at. This upright vacuum cleaner is quieter, lighter, and easier to handle than others we’ve tested, partly due to its flexible swivel head. It also comes with a complete set of attachments for reaching hard-to-clean areas, such as window sills, and getting hair off of upholstery. The Ball Animal 2 is a heavy 18 pounds, and you feel the full weight in your hands when you’re making turns and maneuvering corners. Compared with our main Shark pick and Miele upgrade pick, the Dyson’s swiveling floorhead is hard to control, and the ball joint is enormous, so it can’t fit under most furniture.

One attachment that all Miele Blizzard CX1 canister vacuums come with is the plastic parquet hard floor cleaning head as well as a spiral brushroll head. The Bissell 1161 Hard Floor Expert is a bagless canister vacuum designed for cleaning hard surfaces such as tile, wood or shark dustbuster linoleum. It can also clean carpet but is only useful on very low pile carpet and area rugs. Pick-up on hard floors was impeccable and having the controls on the handle made it super easy to transition between different floor types as well as adjust the power if necessary.

Expect the same stellar performance, but note that the Omni-Glide+ comes with an additional attachment and a slightly different color scheme than the original Omni-Glide model. If you need to keep your space clean but own shedding pets, the Samsung Jet 75 could be the one for you. It also has a narrower cleaning path compared to a Dyson and Hoover.

We also had to pull some hair out of the dust cup from crevices that did not initially empty. This Shark model is a little bulky for a handheld vacuum, but we think the extra-large dust bin makes it worth it. The attachments are what make this vacuum really shine, but there’s no included storage for them, so you’ll need to repurpose a box or bin to make sure you don’t lose them. Overall, we said this vacuum’s performance was very impressive given its size and single suction setting. This is a lightweight and maneuverable canister vacuum with a motorized brushbar making it capable on both carpet and bare floors. Owners like that it is quiet, powerful and even has multiple suction settings.

We did experience the hose twisting a couple of times, but a firm tug usually pulls it straight. We did utilize the flexible wand to vacuum under a bed and indeed it does give extra reach without the need to bend down, but having said that we found it difficult to control the floorhead in this mode. We used the crevice tool to reach down the sides of a sofa as well as for overhead cleaning, to vacuum up some dusty cobwebs near the ceiling. Although when vacuuming overhead using the wand, it quickly starts to feel heavy, so this is best tackled in short bursts. The upholstery tool proved effective at cleaning dust and crumbs from furniture.
