Ride1Up Presents The New Turris, A Practical, Go-Anywhere Electric Bike

Fixies are technically single-speed bikes too but the lack of a freewheel means that if the bike is in motion, your legs must be turning, and you can exercise some control over your speed without touching your brakes. Now more than ever, electric bicycles are becoming less and less bicycles with a motor attached, and more and more purpose-built machines designed to push the capabilities of pedal power even further. One of the newest models to hit the market comes from San Diego-based Ride1Up, in the form of the Turris.

There does persist a fashion for riding fixies with no brakes at all, however we strongly advise against this as – legal implications aside – physics dictate you simply can’t stop as quickly without a front brake. The Turris presents itself as an affordable alternative to today’s crop of premium versatile e-bikes. Essentially an genesis bicycles version of the Croix de Fer, the CDA features a similar plethora of mounts and wide clearances but comes in at a significantly lower price. Part of this is down to the different frame material, but cheaper components are also a factor. The aero features of more expensive bikes are present, with cables are routed internally and the leading edges of the frame are smoothly rounded. The groupset is Shimano Tiagra with a 2×10 drivetrain while the maximum tyre size is 25c. Over ten years the range expanded beyond commuter bikes to include road, mountain, cyclo-cross, gravel, kids and fat bikes. The GenesisDatumis another versatile bike that could serve as a gravel-cruncher or mile-muncher, depending on the tyres you choose to run.

Not quite mainstream, yet still hugely popular, Genesis Bikes are a British brand loved by steel-aficionados and adventurers alike. Well thought out geometry, good looks and great handling make the Genesis Core 26.4 stand out as a great bike at a good price. Kit wise the Genesis is sensibly specced, Shimano Deore takes care of transmission duties with a SLX rear derailleur, brakes are Deore too. Genesis are a British brand that have been building decent bikes and a decent reputation so I was looking forward to a chance to see if the positive buzz about the company and their bikes was well earned.
