The Coleman Sundome 4 is one of the most reviewed tents on the market. When you look at the simple design, small package, and price point, it is easy to see why. However, this is a no-frills dome tent, so when it comes to performance, there are some major flaws, such as fiberglass poles, plastic hooks for the fly, and questionable netting material. You will find adequate ventilation, two storage pockets, and a rainfly that isn’t the worst we have seen. So if you are looking to dip your toe into the camping world and see how you fare, this isn’t a bad option.
The rainfly should even be capable of repelling anything beyond sideways rain. In addition, the bathtub floor means there are no seams too near the ground, and your stuff should be well protected if a puddle forms near the edges. Finally, there is a large vent on the back of the tent that can be staked out to provide a small degree of airflow.

The tent may have a side-to-side divider curtain or attachment loops for one. Look for loops along the walls and ceiling that a divider with toggles can attach to. The rain fly covers only the top section of the tent, basically protecting only the mesh openings, as you realize from the picture. So you can only pray that the lower portion of the tent body is indeed waterproof. Formally, this is a 2-person tent, but the reality is that all these tents are too small for 2 people.
Thoughts of camping chairs may conjure up images of $10 specials out front a big-box retailer, but let’s reorient ourselves to a slightly higher standard. My one complaint in this area is the flimsy fiberglass tent poles. I’m not a fiberglass hater, but these are a little on the thin side. I can see it being easy to form cracks and break, although in over a year of use I haven’t done either as of yet. I still carry materials to make a repair though, just in case. I haven’t got caught in a strong storm yet in this tent, but I imagine it will be easy for the wind to blow the tent in on itself because of the poles.
