Don’t expect it to be as light or nimble as a stick vacuum, but know you’ll be pleased with its maneuverability and effectiveness. In our testing, it impressed us with how easy it was to push across hardwood floors and carpets of all pile heights. We only docked it for its bulkier design, which made it difficult to reach under lower furniture, and poor transfer from a flat surface to a rugged one.

We loved its strong suction, long battery life, and collection of effective tools (though it did have a short hose and a tough-to-remove dirt canister). We found the CHV1410L to be comfortable to handle, at least in a traditional sense. It’s the second lightest of our picks, with a curved, closed handle for an easy grip.

Otherwise, it’s an all-round excellent performer, making it our top choice. Designed with pet owners in mind, this well-priced Shark gobbled up pet hair in one swift sweep thanks to its dedicated tool. It was superb with food crumbs too – lifting every morsel from all shark pet hair vacuum floor types – and dust, picking up 99%, with the majority vanishing in one sweep. Handheld vacs lack the long battery life and large dust capacity of upright and cylinder vacuums, but they’re a top choice for smaller homes with pesky nooks and crannies aplenty.

Most models did well with the medium-size particles, such as the coffee grounds and sand, but weaker models struggled with the heavy chickpeas and with dusty, clingy debris like flour. Some vacuums appeared to suck up debris only to let it drop back out of the intake after we turned off the power. Since most handheld vacuums are designed to handle only smaller messes, Turley said that most people would benefit from owning both a handheld vacuum and a full-sized one.

Keep the inside of your car spick and span with this affordable handheld vac that’s comfortable to use while cleaning. The crevice tool is the only included attachment, and it wasn’t long shark canister vacuum enough for our liking, but this does make it a doddle to store. It wasn’t the best performer on carpet, struggling to pick up some debris, but its upholstery tool lifted pet hair nicely.

Always make sure the vacuum is unplugged or removed from its charging stand before disassembly. The Wandvac is great for cleaning loose debris out of the narrow slot of a sliding window, quickly and easily sucking up all of the oats. It also has a decent reach, cleaning 13″ into a 3″ tall slot, which is quite far for these products, and 4″ into a 1.25″ space. The Wandvac performed slightly above average when we challenged it to remove flour from a low-pile automotive-style carpet section.
