Model L227 is a Quick-Lite model with a wide ventilator. This version, in Dwayne Hanson’s collection, is the most well known with a flat capture nut to hold the ventilator and several indentations in the ventilator . Beginning in May, 1927, Coleman changed the design of the integral pump from built-on to built-in, as on this lantern in Ron Becker’s collection. L427s built after this date all have the built-in pump. I take my globe off and hit the generator with my propane torch for a few seconds, then turn the gas on and it lights right up since I’ve preheated the generator.
It’s a largely obsolete measurement of light output. It’s still used sometimes by manufacturers to measure light intensity in the center of a flashlight coleman battery lantern beam. Never tighten your lantern’s ball nut down on the porcelain ventilator. The ventilator needs to flex a little bit during heating / cooling cycles.
If the lantern is capable of using unleaded gasoline, then it can be used. If the lantern is for use with Coleman liquid fuel, then this is the only type that should be used. Coleman fuel is preferred due to the cleaner burning as compared to unleaded gasoline.
With a match or lighter, hold just beneath the mantle and it will burn. Allow the mantle to burn until it turns into a white ash. Once it turns into a white ash, it will be fragile so if it gets touched or bumped, it will break. This will let a jet of hot gas shoot out of the hole and could burn the glass globe. Reinstall the glass globe and reassemble the lantern.
