The liquid fueled lanterns and stoves can be used much more cheaply than the propane types. If the lantern does not have mantles installed or the coleman battery lantern old ones have a hole in them, they will need to be installed or replaced. Tie the mantle on the burner tube and cut off the excess string.
This lantern, in Ron Lenfield’s collection, includes the box and accessories. Although this lantern has a later style baffle plate, the usual baffle plate in this version is as in the lower image. Not sure what got into me but had a flashback to younger years camping and the hiss these things make. A little cleaning and a bit of fuel and off we go. I’m now able to expose my kids to this technology. Too many nannies saying it’s unsafe, etc etc. but as it is we have enjoyed playing with it and will continue to do so until the kids loose interest.
We also have a worthless LED lantern and several old-timey kerosene lanterns that wife purchased as decorations. In the summer I use a couple of those with citronella to keep bugs away. It’s a largely obsolete measurement of light output. It’s still used sometimes by manufacturers to measure light intensity in the center of a flashlight beam. Never tighten your lantern’s ball nut down on the porcelain ventilator. The ventilator needs to flex a little bit during heating / cooling cycles.
There are propane, butane and liquid fuel lanterns available for those who wish to go the more classic route. Fuel-powered lanterns are ideal for colder temperatures and can produce a bright light, but extra precautions need to be taken, especially around young children or pets. If you’ll need your lantern for an extended period, it is a good idea to carry extra fuel canisters. Coleman still sells a variety of lanterns that are powered by propane, kerosene, or camp fuel .
The higher the lumen rating, the brighter your lantern output. Propane lanterns are often able to produce anywhere from 1,000-1,500 lumens, while LED models are more likely to have lumen ratings below 1,000. The construction of the above 228B built in May 1930 includes a swaged bail that will only fit in the key slot on the frame member when it is under the frame. As a result the bail will not detach from an assembled lantern. This MF143 lantern is stamped Sunshine Safety Lamp Co. on the baffle plate and is a built-in pump version of Model MF125 above.
If you know you’ll be using your lantern while hiking, camping or traveling, you’ll want to choose a Coleman model that isn’t too large or heavy. There are multiple sizes available and some portable lanterns are even collapsible, making storage a breeze. I’d always wanted a Coleman Duel Fuel Lantern but could never justify coughing up close to $100 to buy a new one. I have a propane lantern that I received as a spiff from work a few years ago. It works like a champ but we just don’t use it that often.
