Carpet machines of the past have been bulky, but this one is lightweight and gets a high-five from our Cleaning Lab for its brush roll cover that removes for cleaning. We do, however, wish this cleaner had onboard tool storage for the included tools and accessories to avoid losing them. An included brush helps clean bissell rug cleaner the tank, but we found we didn’t need to use it. There are no hoses or other special attachments, so the cleaner isn’t the most versatile, but it works so well with the two available settings and has a small floor head for concentrated cleaning. It’s also relatively quiet and lighter than other models we tested.
A pet upholstery tool and tough stain tool keep you armed and ready for the next mess. One of our favorite features on the Hoover Power Scrub is its SpinScrub brush system. Instead of a standard rotating roller brush, the Power Scrub has a series of horizontal brush heads that spin around to dislodge stains. In our testing, the Power Scrub needed only a few passes to clean up dirt, soy sauce and fruit punch stains. The Hoover has two hefty 1.25-gallon water tanks, so you’ll have a good supply on hand.
This machine cleans deeply yet is maneuverable and lightweight, weighing in at under 18 pounds. It’s one of Bissell’s most powerful carpet cleaners and can take on tough stains. For regular light or moderate cleaning, a lightweight maneuverable model is best, but for occasional deep cleans, you’ll need the most powerful machine, even if it’s heavy and bulky.
Although their names might look similar to the ones that sit near the top of our ratings chart, the following three machines—the bottom scorers in our ratings—are worse than average at cleaning.
