Both are nice looking and were full of fuel. It’s a true joy to bring one of these back to life. This makes me really miss our Coleman Propane lantern. We lent it to my brother in law for his camping trip and it never returned to us…RIP Coleman. Little did I know I was heading deep into a rabbit hole–and a fascinating chapter in the history of American camping. Again 355 lamp globes are marked in the very same way depending on country of origin.

If the lantern is capable of using unleaded gasoline, then it can be used. If the lantern is for use with Coleman liquid fuel, then this is the only type that should be used. Coleman fuel is preferred due to the cleaner burning as compared to unleaded gasoline.

Model L227 is a Quick-Lite model with a wide ventilator. This version, in Dwayne Hanson’s collection, is the most well known with a flat capture nut to hold the ventilator and several indentations in the ventilator . Beginning in May, 1927, Coleman changed the design of the integral pump from coleman battery lantern built-on to built-in, as on this lantern in Ron Becker’s collection. The Mantle is the part of the Lanterns shown below, that generates bright white light when heated by flame.

With a match or lighter, hold just beneath the mantle and it will burn. Allow the mantle to burn until it turns into a white ash. Once it turns into a white ash, it will be fragile so if it gets touched or bumped, it will break. This will let a jet of hot gas shoot out of the hole and could burn the glass globe. Reinstall the glass globe and reassemble the lantern.
