Genesis Bikes

A rim brake version is available in addition to the disc option and both come with Shimano Ultegra 2×11 groupsets. The maximum tyre size on bike is 28c, typical for rim brake set ups but relatively narrow for a bike with discs. But for races that are solely on roads, this should be more than adequate.

Definitely not a versatile bike; this is designed with only CX racing in mind and makes no compromises – except for, perhaps, its two sets of bottle bosses. There are three different spec levels, with 10 being the entry level, 20 the mid-range and 30 being the top of this range. For the entry level, you’ll get a Shimano Claris 2×8 drivetrain, an aluminium frame and carbon fork.

The brakes are TRP’s cable operated Spyres – they’re not as powerful as a hydraulic setup, but braking is consistent and sufficiently powerful. Capable on and off road, it was a gentle step away from our original Vapour and towards a bike that was intended to go further… but we never imagined quite how much further. We’ve seen that the suspension can wear out over time depending on how aggressively you ride it. Almost the antithesis of the Day One, the Flyer is sublime in its simplicity. It employs easily adjustable rim brakes, a single 42×17 gear, and it has mudguards to keep the spray off. Although the genesis mountain bike frame is steel, it’s relatively lightweight with a carbon fork and no excess components weighing it down. This is a bike that will zip around town without a second thought. There aren’t mounting points for front or rear pannier racks; strap on bike-packing bags are the weapon of choice here.

As the price increases, so does the level of tech, with Di2 included in the top-end model. Genesis produces bikes for all cycling disciplines, including road, mountain, cyclocross, gravel/adventure and commuting. For what I paid and what it has allowed me to do I have to say money well spent. I hit a few trails regularly and really my biggest complaint is clearance. Which is a purchase of a shorter crank arm and ill probably upgrade my front fork sooner or later.

It is actually considered one of the most affordable mountain bikes for its class. Let’s go through some of the features that really make this bike stand out. The basics are there in full length mudguards, a rear pannier rack, and puncture resistant tyres. With clearance for tyres up to 38c and a steel frame that will be robust and help deaden the road chatter, this is a bike with the stamina to match your own. Due to being disc brake only, the bridge between the seatstays could be removed. This further increases mud clearance and also adds to the frame’s compliance, providing better control.

Essentially an aluminium version of the Croix de Fer, the CDA features a similar plethora of mounts and wide clearances but comes in at a significantly lower price. Part of this is down to the different frame material, but cheaper components are also a factor. Other bikes might have the specificity to perform better in a single one of these uses, but very few bikes would be able to perform as well as the Croix de Fer in all of them. It is the combination of a vast array of mounts, a robust steel frame and wide tyre clearances that allow this bike to be such a jack of all trades. The aero features of more expensive bikes are present, with cables are routed internally and the leading edges of the frame are smoothly rounded.

Join us to carry forward our mission to build a better world through bikes. Adventure is probably the biggest category for Genesis, and a full array of mud-loving, gravel-crunching expedition machines are available. Genesis has a lot of bikes in its ‘other’ category, so we’ve broken them down into Adventure, Cyclocross and Urban. Next up is the endurance-focused Zeal, which is full carbon, so you can ride longer and faster with less effort. If you’re a roadie, Genesis has a few models for you to consider.

Genesis was founded in the UK back in 2006, but the first — The Day One — was actually produced under Ridgeback in 2001. It was so popular that it became a label in its own right five years later. Bikes for all occasions, from all materials, that ride well, last a lifetime and look good while they’re at it. I have about 1000 miles on this bike and it is still going strong, shifts well. Some of the parts are kinda cheesey, but it is a wally world bike.
