Playing with magic Decathlons Magic Bike concept study gives us a taste of tomorrows urban mobility

“The start of this collaboration was technical at first, because we didn’t deeply understand generative design or what it could bring,” said Decathlon Advanced Design team member Charles Cambianica. “Thanks to this project, we realized how this technology is not just an additional tool but truly a new way of conceiving and decathlon bike designing our products. Autodesk offers us a view of a new possible when creating products of the future. Clearly, this technology allows us to go even further because it saves us time, makes the products better and above all–this is a very important point–keeps people at the heart of the creation process,” he said.

Akin to the United States’ REI, Decathlon is well-known for making reasonably-priced, entry level camping gear that won’t break down or break your wallet. Although there is no exact information about the motor and the gearshift, Decathlon itself only mentions the use of an automatic transmission and a toothed belt. The entire drivetrain is also well protected from dirt from the outside thanks to a closed casing. So you can decide individually when and whether which rack system is needed. The respective rack is then simply docked onto the frame with a single click.

It looks like this is going to be a permanent fixture in what is now a two-bike quiver. I come from a perspective that this is a secondary bike that I purely intended to use for indoor training. If you’re looking for a review about the bike itself, here’s an encouraging one by BikeRadar.com that I echo. We want to assure you that we are not supporting or encouraging decathlon mountain bike any activities of this sort. We have removed all products that fall into this category or have any translation issues. Decathlon will expand to additional locations, first in the San Francisco Bay Area, provided certain sales “triggers” are met, then gradually across the United States in big sporting goods markets, such as New York and Los Angeles.

The site — in the same neighborhood as an Ikea, Super Target, Home Depot and Best Buy — was chosen as it had good public transit, road and cycling access and is within an hour’s drive of six million consumers. Maybe my least favorite of the items I tried, these lugged-sole, SPD-compatible shoes worked fine but felt cheap and a little clunky. The shape was boxy for me, and although the problem was alleviated a little by cinching up the straps, the plasticky-feeling synthetic leather upper then bunched up. More important, the hard plastic outsole proved slick on rocks and in stream crossings. These are adequate, but footwear specialists like Shimano and Pearl Izumi make superior products for not much more money.

Almost no technical details have been released about the specifications of the LD 920 E Connected, although we can guess at several aspects if we take other models in the Decathlon range as a reference. All Original models have padded saddles, but the saddle of the 500 line has extra cushioning and is also a bit wider. In the 20″ line, the bigger difference is that the 100 is a single-speed, while the 500 is a 6-speed.

We recently covered the launch of their 30mph ‘future bike’ that actually supposes future changes in the e-bike speed limit. Its current illegality hasn’t stopped them taking plenty of preorders…. Decathlon’s brands have always been known for their incredible value for money—heck, I just recently picked up a new Triban road bike, yet another cycling brand under the Decathlon umbrella, and needless to say, I’m thoroughly pleased. That said, the 920 E could very well change the commuter e-bike game, assuming it’s priced right. With its brand-new electric bikes created for all sorts of riders, Decathlon is undeniably an up and coming player in the rapidly growing e-bike scene.

The Microshift grip shifter of the Btwin Original is easy to engage and is made of soft rubber to provide nice cushioning for the hands. While the Microshift brand is not as well known as Shimano, it’s well established in the biking industry and is known for manufacturing quality budget shifters. Many high-quality brands such as Guardian Bikes and Polygon are using Microshift components on their kids bikes. You don’t get the usual range of gears you find on most road bikes as the RC100 only has a single chainring with a seven-speed Shimano cassette.
